OUT with the OLD and IN with the NEW : MOBY's NEW Synergy Gas Tank Skid

I love how you patches it right where the "not repairable" lettering is lmao. That's all CYA and that im sure will hold. I noticed mine is starting to rub too. Ive also deflected it enough that the portion by the tcase bent out and rubs drive shaft yoke some when engine flexes around. My skid looks just like yours after 6 years of constant abuse!

It may sound sappy but I would totally put that stock skid on the wall in the garage. Poor thing took some serious abuse.

LOL!! Not sappy at all. I was thinking about figuring out a way to hang it from the ceiling in my garage so that you can see the bottom of it. :D

Synergy makes good stuff!! That skid plate is pure beef

While I would have been more than happy with another factory skid, I have to say this one does look like it'll be able to take a bit more of a beating.

Great information! Though mine isn't that bad yet(I'm still working on it). I'm glad to know there is a good replacement , when the time comes. 🤙

With any luck, you won't need to replace yours ever but if you do need to, yes, this is what I would recommend.

that's a chore!

but I do like the placement of the repair - 'not repairable' ....except here...

:cheesy: It sure is hard to make a repair on something when there's a glaring message saying that you shouldn't

Damn that looks way bigger than the factory.

Way thicker and heavier for sure.

Wow that’s a nice skid plate! Great info Eddie. Moby probably feels like a new man.

LOL!! Almost but not quite yet. He's got a steering pump that's starting to fail and I gotta get that replaced first. But, after that, yeah, he'll be good to go again. :yup:

Looks like it'll take a beating well. Glad you got it fixed!

Does it come down a little farther than stock?
Maybe it's just the camera angle...

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as stock but compared to Moby's original tank that had been clearanced, there are places where it sits about 4" lower or more

I just used the exact same lock union for the fuel system on the TJ. They work great.

They really are great and I've used them before on my older Jeeps too. I just wish I could have found a 10mm union locally so that I could have gotten this done a week sooner.

How in the world can parts for a ‘12 Jeep be discontinued already? That makes me wonder what else isn’t available [emoji15]

No you is a 2007.

What Overlander was trying to say. Moby is a 2007. That being said, even newer parts that are available are back ordered big time. Ask me how I know. :rolleyes2:

Is it just the camera angle, or is there a big squared off edge (anchor) at the front where the factory skid was smooth to slide across obstacles?

I like the "non repairable" line. Must be the corporate lawyers at work.

It's just the camera angle. It's angled and slopes back. Not as smooth and clean as the factory skid but I don't think it'll be too much of a problem.

Dang that thing has seen better days, new one looks great. #mallcrawler

LOL!! Yes it has but not for a very long time.

Well, someone’s about to find out if synergy makes quality skids. One way or another, I look forward to seeing how it holds up.

Those line remnants on the tank and tub is crazy. And thank god you caught it with no issues. [emoji106]

Yeah, being so close to the exhaust, there's a chance something bad could of happened.

Great fuel fix for Moby! The Synergy skid completely replaces the OEM gas tank skid whereas other gas tank skids marketed are added onto the OEM skid. Looking forward to your "test-drive" on the trails.

Yup, unlike all the other skids out there that are ADDED to the OE skid, the Synergy is a complete replacement. Certainly, the benefit of this is that you don't have to carry the weight of the OE skid and of course, it's about the only real option available to replace a worn out OE skid.

Man, that's some serious Mall you've been frequenting :)

The mall has big speed bumps. :yup:

While you ultimately had to replace it, that's a pretty damn good testament to the effectiveness of the factory skids. :thumb:

As a side note - man, that is a close fit between the rear DS and exhaust coming off the Tcase! Is the exhaust completely hand fabricated?

Oh yeah, the factory skid did awesome. In fact, I'd still say it did it's job great and Moby's gas tank is still intact. A part of me was about ready to just pound it flat and reinstall it but as I was removing the bolts securing it to the frame, the mounting brackets were springing out from it being so warps. It became very clear that getting it reinstalled was going to be difficult at best.

The exhaust is completely hand fabricated and routed in the only way that it could be routed. In fact, I actually had to cut off the corner on the side of the Synergy skid in order to install it as it was originally making contact with the exhaust.

LOL!! I figured as much and really, at this point and time, what was I to do?

Yeah, I've had to straighten out my t-case skid a few times with a shop press to keep it clear of things. As far as your gas tank skid goes, I have a feeling it's about as clearanced as it gets and then next 5 years won't change how it looks much if at all. :D

I like how you used the cardboard during installation to avoid scratching the skid. [emoji23]

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!! :grayno:

It finally died. New one looks sweet, scratch it up already.

I’ll bet the lift made that much easier. Looks like one of those projects you never really want to to, but may have to. Nice write up.

OK, its been a year and half since you put on this Synergy gas tank skid plate. Given the very high price of the Synergy skid plate, I would hope that it is doing well. How is it holding up? Is it suffering far less damage than the factory skid plate?

So, the pros of this skid are as follows:
1. It exists unlike a new OE replacement.
2. It completely replaces the OE skid unlike most aftermarket skids that just install over the OE.
3. It is stout! It can really take a beating.

Now, there are a few cons:
1. It is expensive.
2. It is very heavy.
3. If you have big enough flex, your rear drive shaft will make solid contact with it. In the past, I had hammered in my OE skid to help prevent this but now all I can do is just push the axle over a bit.
