Nitto Mud Grappler vs Trail Grappler

I love my mud grapplers! The sound is great and I love the looks you get sometimes from peopke

I don't really like the look as much as Wrangler MT (that's my opinion. Not shared by all I'm sure)

But that sound is very tempting. I really think it'd put my baby to sleep during trips.

Trail Grapplers are going to be your best on/offroad tire IMO

The Mud Grapplers are badass but not for me...

I'm in the same spot. I've had my Mud Grapplers on my JK since Feb of 11' and its time for new meat. I'm torn between the Mud or Trail Grapplers....

I think you need your back spacing to be atleast 4 to fit a 13.5" wide tire but even comparing a 35" mud grappler to a 35" trail grappler (both are 12.5" wide) the mud will still physically be wider because of how massive the side lugs are

37" trails and I'm very pleased. Noise is minimal, especially with the hard top on

I love my tails, great on and off road. I laugh when a stock rubi goes past me on the highway since those tires are louder than my trails which I cant even hear, even with doors off.

The tires that came stock on my wife's sahara are louder than my AT's...

This is probably a silly question but, does the tire really make a difference in comfort on the road? Especially in comparing Nitto Mud and Trail Grapplers? I know Eddie that you said I would be happy if I did go with the Trail Grapplers and I believe you, but why am I going to be happy?

Maybe moving to the Trail Grappler tire would help some of my front end issues out some? I'm running 35x12.50x17 on the stock wheels right now; I would like to move to the 37" flavor if I do decide to go with the Trail Grapplers, but I'm unsure if that is such a good idea right now.

There won't be much of a difference in road "comfort" as they both have thick sidewalls. The trail grapplers are just a lot quieter. Also, due to their tread, the trail grapplers will also help you to track straighter when driving hard and fast in the desert.

13.5!! Wow that's crazy :0 how much back space do u need? Like 5 inch?

You need to have 3.5" of back spacing. 5" is too much.

Do the Trail Grapplers run true to size?? I really like my Duratracs and I'm not sure I can run 37's. The DT's run small since they are 315's.

The way I read it, the Mud graps are better for a non DD. If it's your DD, get the trail grap.

I have 35 x 15 GY MTR. How much louder are the Mud Graps? My hearing isn't too good anyway, don't think I'd mind the noise.

I was looking at them last night, figure the 13.5" on 37's could be an issue.

Ran the 37 Mud Grapplers for a few years. Great in the rocks and mud. Did tend to slide sideways in the mud.
Great traction on wet rocks. They have a better bead protecting side wall for folks not running beadlocks.

Now running the 37 trail grapplers. Other than quiter and getting 18.2 mpg ( compared to a best of 16.1 with Muds) on my last 1700 mile trip I havent been too impressed yet. One was so out of round I have to use it for the spare. Took a ton of weights to balance compared to the Muds.
Will go back to mud grapplers next time around.

So a couple of years ago, I purchased a set of Nitto Mud Grapplers knowing that they would be loud on the road and deafening on the highway; but off-road they would be amazing. Needless to say, I probably should have gone with the Trail Grapplers instead. Most of my driving is on road but I wanted a tire that was really good off the road in the sand, dirt, mud, rocks and other obstacles. I'm looking for a comparison if anyone has a set of both of these. The ultimate comparison I'm looking for is road and highway ride quality and noise. I'm hoping to make it next year to the EJS(2014) and I want to drive the Jeep there from Wisconsin and I don't want to be deaf by the time I get there. I don't mind a little hum on the road, but anyone who has a set of Mud Grapplers know that they are pretty loud. My wife knows I'm coming home from a mile away because she can hear the loud hum of those tires. I just want something a little bit quieter but still very good off the road. I like Nitto a lot but I'm not against something else if anyone has any suggestions. Class E tire is what I prefer, but I could go with a D also; nothing less than an 8 ply though. Thanks ;)
since you said you might consider another brand... I would recommend Toyo Open Country MT. my 37's took almost no weight to balance on beadlocks (one literally took zero weight) great on the road as far as noise and smooth ride. I have 20,000 mi on my set with nice even wear. They have performed well for me off road in all types of terrain all over Colorado and Utah.
I don't have any experience with Nittos to compare but Eddie can offer his evaluation. I would be curious as well when deciding on my next set of tires.
