If you are into the old school topographic maps, you can download them in tiff format from http://libremap.org
These are what I used to put together my topo map experiment listed in my sig, but I don't have all of them, and they are outdated.
I'll see if I can dig up the links, but most map data is available online now through government websites. With enough digging off the usgs.gov website you can find maps for just about anything.
