Locker types: what's the difference?

So I was looking as lockers and I wasn't sure about what the different kinds of lockers were.. so I have a couple questions.

What's the difference between a detroit locker and an air locker?

Why do most guys run an air locker and not an automatic noSlip detroit locker like Eaton makes.

Is a detroit locker the same thing as an eLocker?

If there is a thread about this already im sorry moderators.

most people run air lockers because they are selectable. you can have it on when you need it over it kicking in when your making a turn and having your tire squeal. thats why i run an ARB air locker. the jk's traction control system is very good as is. i think i have only used my air locker once since i had it and that was when i was stick in an ice hole at rausch with hinrich. other than that i havent needed it.

as far as the rest goes i will leacve that for others to answer since i dont really know 100%

basically- what cozdude said- the Detroit locker is a non selectable always on. The air locker and elocker (electric) and ox cable locker=can be turned on and off.

Thanks guys.

Good to know. Anyone here run a detroit locker??

david1tontj does, he warns people all the time that there is a learning curve for those who run one on a DD.

Hmmm... ill have to msg him and ask. The articles mainly talk about locked rear diffs. I guess most people dont lock the front?

Well the Detroit is an auto locker, going around a corner can fool it into sensing a slip, so mid turn it may lock. With the HIGH traction of a paved road this can create an interesting moment

Agreed. For now I just enjoy wheeling and learn my rigs ins and outs. Which reminds me. You better be at RC in spring, army vet. We haven't had the pleasure of wheeling together

Be there with bells on:thumb:

It really is just a matter of adjusting your driving style a little bit with auto lockers( ie detroit spartan and lock rite) when going around a corner you take it just a little faster and coast through it, never had a problem, if you wanna power slide then you floor it :cheesy::thumb: but on highway driving as your taking a banking corner if you punch it it will work against your steering but back off and boom your good. I ran auto lockers in both axles of my jeep and drove it everywhere and love it but thats just me! try to drive someones jeep or some such with a auto locker in the rear and see how it feels, cause a selectable locker is just the same as not having one when its disengaged!

I've also heard that Detroit lockers are much stronger than ARB/ selectable lockers which can break.

This is why a selectable locker is best. You basically flip a switch to turn it on and off. When off it's an open diff just like stock on a sport or rubi.

I have heard of people having issues with ARB but they are few and far between from what I heard. Also heard ARB had a good warranty with them. It was an easy choice for me when picking my ARB. It's expensive but prob the best proven selectable locker on the market.
