Caught the Bug
Well, about a week or so ago Eddie and I were responding back to a Wayalife Member on his post on RCV axle Shafts. I said they are a pain in the butt and a lot of maintenance, plus the boots crack often. I also stated the the RCV shaft are incredibly strong and now you transfer your weak point to the Ring and pinion and so forth. Anyway yesterday I was doing an oil change and greasing my joints on my control arms and etc. well, wouldn’t you know it, my dam RCV boot was cracked. There went another 75.00 dollars with shipping.

Damn, I’m sorry to hear that man! That’s a big reason I don’t want RCV shafts. I would rather swap a relatively inexpensive U-joint than a whole axle assembly like that. I want to keep the weak points in the parts that are as easy to fix as possible.

It was just swapping the boot, but it is a pain. The boots are like a hard plastic and crack often. I had to use a heat gun to heat the boot to get it pliable to be able to get it on the axle shaft. Just a pain.
 
Bummer. As you know, I've run RCVs and on more than one Jeep but really, I just do see the point of it anymore. To this date, I have yet to have a single chromoly shaft with a full circle clip fail at the u-joint. Not a one in over 20 years. I think I'll just save my money from here on out.

I do not blame you at all Eddie. I plan on swapping these for some good Chromoly Shafts with full circle clips. If you could let me know what brand you prefer? Between boots cracking and greasing them and they fling grease everywhere. Especially here in Tucson AZ, where it gets 110 degrees. The grease gets really thin and seeps out of the boot and gets flung everywhere.
 
I’ve had my RCV front shafts for about 9k miles and fortunately no cracked boots so far, but damn the grease getting flung everywhere. Dirt combines with it and makes a greasy mud pie around the knuckles. I’ve been thinking of getting rid of mine also because of the mess!
 
love our RCVs 12 years old or so and still going strong. love no binding when turning and super reliable plus incredible warranty & US made unlike most chromoly shafts
