Jeep JL 3.6 oil

I own a 2020 Jeep JL with the 3.6. I see in some YouTube videos, some people recommend changing the viscosity of the engine oil to 5W30. What is the general consensus on doing this for better engine wear? At present I only have 15,000 miles on it.

In all seriousness, I would never pretend to know as much as what you can read or see on YouTube, social media or the internet in general but for me personally, I use what Jeep says to use or at least, until my warranty is up. And, so far, it's never been a problem for me and for almost 30 years now.

We have a 2021 and have been using 0w20 for the last 60k+ miles and have had no issues. Its what's stamped on my oil fill cap. Like Eddie said run what you want or what ever the internet says. You'll be good to go!

Recently had the cam shafts on the passenger side of my 2018 3.6JL replaced due to the rocker tick and misfire at higher revs.
I had the oil discussion with the mechanic and he educated me on the differences between the newer 3.6 JL versus the JK 3.6.
He says to stick with 0w20 for the JL to avoid issues.
The jk 3.6 tick is common because of its design, but the JLs he has had to repair are low mileage and because the owner used different weight oil, didn't keep it changed at regular intervals (5000) or levels were too low or too high, most he saw were about a quart low.
He says a full synthetic 0w20 for the newer JL 3.6, at regular intervals and if you get the work done at an oil change location, check the level to make sure it at the proper level; something I do because they always seem to overfill it, I'll make them drain some oil to get it right.

Great, thanks for the info. So far I have only used the 0W20 and change it every 5000 kilometres.

Curious how much it cost to replace the cams and rockers on one side (parts and then labor). I just had both head gaskets replaced and debated having the cams and rockers replaced as well; add it to the "while I'm there" category and reduce some labor cost for future repairs. Cams and rockers looked good as new when they removed them (72k miles).

Why would you want to replace parts which are as "good as new"? Perhaps the new parts won't fare as well.

I can tell you exactly, I had it done two years ago and the dealer up in Utah charged me just over $9800. And… I’m now having the same problem with the passenger side again.

That's why I didn't want to go to a dealer, the guy I found knows his stuff and it cost me $2,500 which included the diagnostics; only had to replace cams for right side.
Had it been the older JK 3.6, it would have been around 1500 but the JL parts are slightly different and more expensive as it's sold as a kit, had all rockers, rods replaced since it was apart

To be fair, they did have to replace the entire driver side head which I’m sure was a big chunk of that $9800.

the head is a full assembly and around $900 from what the mechanic told me (luckily valves were good).
dealer labor is sky high
The price may be different because he first quoted me 1500 assuming it was the same as the JK but then realized it was the JL and parts more expensive

I see automotive estimates every day. We're at a point where parts and labor on fixing a vehicle could easily be a month or two of someone's wages. It's nuts.
I let a huge sigh of relief out when he quoted me the price, I knew it would be high and I was prepared for higher but was very happy with what I paid.
had it been a normal fucking car, that amount of money would have covered an entire top end with machining... well maybe I'm just too fucking old and too much time to has passed LOL

I remember when bread was 20 cents a loaf lol

It is pretty crazy how expensive these repairs are. For reference: both head gaskets, radiator, and a couple of miscellaneous items (belt, oil cooler, therm, etc..) was around $4k (OEM parts and repair at Jeep dealer).

I'm pretty sure the engineers designed them to take hours just to get the shit out of the way to do the one hour repair job
