Hinged Gate vs. Bumper Mounted Tire Carrier

I just got my EVO lift and 35" KO2s installed yesterday and I need a quick solution for my spare tire. What are the pros and cons of running a hinged gate carrier like the EVO vs. a bumper mounted tire carrier like ACE, Poison Spyder, etc.?

Is the hinged gate style only worth it if you leave your stock rear bumper alone?

It seems like the price of the EVO plus a new rear bumper could be about the same price as a rear bumper/tire carrier combo.

Of the choices you are looking at, this is what I can tell you.

A hinged tire carrier simply helps to get the entire weight of the spare off the tailgate itself and transfers part of the load to the body. It's something to consider if you're running bumperless in the rear. Back in the day, it was really the only way you could maintain the ability to open your tailgate like factory. The biggest downside to a carrier like this is that the spare is STILL attached to the tailgate. If you come off a tall ledge or climb a steep obstacle, your spare will catch and jack up your tailgate and or rear glass if you have one.

Bumper tire carriers are nice in that you transfer the entire weight of the spare onto the frame and of course the bumper gives you serious protection as well. Now that modern designs include the ability to still open your tailgate with one hand just like factory, it's a good option to consider especially being that if you come off a big ledge or climb a steep obstacle, your spare will not damage your tailgate or rear glass.

If you're running your stock wheels you can retain the same isolators...just need a little pushing to get the lugs to thread.

Thanks guys. Do I need a bracket to raise the tire up? I tried mounting it but the tire rubbed the rear bumper.

You can get just rubber tubing for a lot cheaper at your local hardware store that will snug up right over the stock isolator

Okay great. So is my only concern with running a 35 on the stock carrier hitting the tire on something? Or do I need to be concerned with the weight also?

If you decide to go with a tailgate mount you might want to look at MORryde spare tire carrier. It replaces your hinges like the evo does but its less expensive. I have it on lm Jeep Im running 37's on bead lock rims and it holds it amazing no squeeking or rattling its solid and it doesnt sag. here is a link to there sight. http://www.morryde.com/products/148...cts/129-heavy-duty-jk-wrangler-tailgate-hinge

:cheesy: It always cracks me up how fanboys feel the need to chime in on a thread to recommend what they've chosen to buy, complete with a link of course and this in spite of the fact that the OP never asked about it.
 
I'm still running the stock carrier at this point, but it looks like some of the rivets by the hinges may already be affected. It looks like the metal is starting to deform around them.

Have there been any reviews, positive or negative, on the EVO Pro Series Hinged Gate Carrier? I seem to remember reading some people had issues with fasteners, and when I just looked on NorthRidge it said Discontinued..

The LOD Destroyer series looks interesting as well..

Yes, I will contact them once I've decided what my purchase will be. At this point, I am undecided.
