Hill 60 mine search.

I have to say being part of this forum has inspired me to look more into the rich past of the area in which I live, with all the threads and videos of the cool mines there are to explore down south I have been researching them around here. The area I have been looking at lately is know as hill 60, I started looking into it after a saw a picture a friend took of a mine on hill 60, so with the help of google I found this site giving the history of the area, http://www.cowichanlake.ca/tourism_hillhistory.php. It help give me an idea of roughly what part of the hill the mines were located, and the fact there is at least three or maybe four different sites. I had a few spare hours yesterday so I loaded up to take a look and see what I could find.

I came across some interesting stuff not to long into the search.

Found this ice frozen to a brick.

Some old steel pieces, judging by how the one is riveted together this site was from the mining of the rhodonite in the area during the early 50's.



I continued up the hill till it turned into a trail.

The trail took me further up the hill, but I found no remains of a mine, I came out to this view west looking into the town of lake cowichan and the lake it's named after.


My day was cut shorter when my water pump started to squeal like crazy, so I'm headed to the dealer soon to have it looked at. Hopefully you too will be inspired to look into the history of your area as well, happy hunting

Hey Trailbear, you have some excellent pictures, of the Hill 60 mine. Trying to find the 4 mile long horse and buggy trail to the mine and the cable tramp way to the mine. I am feeling there are more than one site the miners excavated, which you mention. It would be much apprciated if you could contact me at 250 5104805 to discuss further.
