has anyone painted the inside of their hardtop?

So, with the beautiful weather this weekend in NC and no plans, I decided to tackle painting the inside of the hardtop. Here was my process:

1 - Remove Freedom Panels

2 - Remove hardtop. As you all know, this is not a 1 man job, so when your fiancée tries and can't lift it, bring your neighbor a beer and have him give you a hand.
3 - Remove all hardware from the freedom top and store in a bag, as they little jewels have a tendency to grow legs and disappear
4 - Tape off all exterior edges of the top as well as the glass panels in the rear. (Still had left edge to tape).

5 - Clean the entire interior surface of the top with mineral spirits to get all dirt / dust / residue off the surface. Wipe puddles away, the rest will dry quickly.
6 - Repeat step 6 with acetone to soften the fiberglass to more readily bond with the paint.
7 - Paint the interior of the top with Krylon Fusion in the color of your choosing. I went with black in a satin finish. As stated earlier in the tread, long strokes, and be quick in the corners to avoid runs / puddles. This paint has a super quick dry time (15 minutes), so go with more coats that are thinner. This will set you up for a better finished product with no runs.

Here are the freedom tops after 1 coat.

8- Repeat step 7 for 4 total coats
9 - Remove tape and re-install hardware
10 - Re-install the top, but be aware as the paint does not fully bond to the plastic until a 7 day cure time is complete. It will be fine to handle after 1 hour, but will not hold up to impact / scratches until day 7

That's it. Super easy upgrade if you take your time and do it right. Here are a couple shots of the finished product.

All in all, this was a great little project and it looks like it came from the factory if done correctly. I am very happy with this and think the JK should come with the top in black to begin with.

Nice job swampdog! Thanks for putting this up. It's on my list for a rainy day (sunny actually but you get what I mean). And agreed it should from come factory in black.

Looks Great! We have everything but the paint and I had my Wife put it on our shopping list for tomorrow's trip to Town. We can get started next pretty day.

Thanks!

This is something I am thinking about doing. Definitely adding this to the list. Looks great!

I painted mine with a gun and some type of matte black interior paint made for plastics. It turned out very nice. There are some wear spots on the Freedom tops from removing them so often. I also installed black hotheads afterward and it came out very nice.

Very interesting! Just wondering, does this reduce the amount of "interior window reflections" at night in the from Window tinting?

Please advise,
Rocky

Definitely doin this when the weather clears up.
Almost seems like the JK designers left the inside white just to give us another project? Lol

Was the Hard Top Body Color or Black

I am curious if the inside of the Hard Tops were Body Color or regular Black?

I am ordering a Body Color Hard Top for my 2016 JKUR and would think that it would look weird if it was white inside.

Looks great. Nice write up swampdog. To me the white inside of the top looked unfinished, now after painting mine it looks like the interior is finally done. One of my favorite mods.

I have seen guys use black plasti dip before to paint the inside of a hard top. Looks pretty good and the best part is it is not permanent if you do not like how it turns out. I was thinking about trying it out this summer when i take the hard top off.

Looksgreat, quick q, how did you mount your hi-lift and shovel, great use of the space BTW!

Geberhard, the jack is mounted with u bolts above the seatbelt brackets, the base is removed and stored remotely. The shovel is mounted to the jack handle using 2 quickfist clamps bolted together. Sorry it took me so long to respond. It hangs about 1 1/2" below the roll bar but you can see thru the holes in the jack, the shovel is completely out of sight from the rear view mirror.
