I cleaned it a bit, certainly considering if I clean it enough at this point. If I can get the two opposing caps backed out, then I could re clean and try to re press.
Ok so I broke one of the u-joints, the cap on the opposite side popped completely off leaving the bearing exposed. The auto parts store replaced it under warranty and I found a place around the corner that pressed both for $65, including extracting the broken cap shell. What the hell, I should have look at this solution to begin with.
So tomorrow it's in with the axles, on the wheel bearing and rotors and brakes and wheels . . . what a week.
Sunday I got the tires on the ground and took it for a spin, no funky noises etc. I was going about 30mph downhill and hard braked, was a hands free straight stop.
