I think you are right, while the top of the breather hose is not wet with oil there is a trail following the hose the whole way down.

WJCO when the valve seats drops does it happen on first start then go away? Started up this morning and it was barely running miss firing like all buggery. Took it around the block and everything is fine now, running perfectly.

IIrc, it's does it all the time. Misfire and noise. Been awhile since I've seen one though.
Mmm I think it's fucked, runs fine but definitely feels down on power, and getting hotter quicker up steep inclines than it was before before

The 6 hours drive home was fine (stupid traffic) and it has thrown a P0155 (o2 sensor issue) which could explain the slight power loss, maybe I have dodged a bullet after all!
