A new eruption just started here in Hawaii

Not a chance...a long time ago Army dive bombers tried diverting the flow...to no avail

Not to mention cultural sensitivity. A lot of the locals would pissed if anyone tried to divert it. Also, diverting it in any direction would put more homes at risk anyway. As much as it sucks for a lot of people, we just need to accept the fact that we live on a volcanic island with a very young volcano and there will be continuous eruptions to span our great great grandchildren’s lives and beyond.

Roger that...

Flights out of lax are pretty cheap into Hawai’i right now. Wonder why.

Lol. It’s not that bad here. If anyone is considering it, I say go for it while it’s cheap. Life is largely unchanged here except that we can’t go to certain beaches for obvious reasons. There is much more to see and do on the rest of the island. Barring another 6.9+ quake, everything is normal outside of lower Puna or Ka’u.

Sure it’s not owned by the government? Sounds like one of their operations...haha

[emoji23] sure sounds like it. I think it’s owned by Ormat or some company in the 48. I heard a rumor that it’s owned by the saudis but I honestly have no idea.

PGV provides only 2% of the electricity on the Big Island...they sell what they generate to to the local utility Hawaii Electric Light Co...

You know, I was talking to one of the employees at pgv probably a year ago and he said that they produce enough power in a day to power the entire state for a month. Hawaii electric light owns the lines and poles so they regulate it to maintain the monopoly. Interesting how each county has their own name for an electric company but they’re all owned by the same people.

Yup. Fountains are getting bigger and bigger. It has already cut off roads to some of our favorite camp spots, including Pohoiki where I first learned to surf as a kid. Sad times.

Here is a current shot from the USGS webcam mounted on a tower within the geothermal complex.

Sad to see. Stay safe.

Volcanic eruptions are so spectacular and sureal yet so devastating. It's like a flood and wildfire all rolled into one. Stay safe.
