A Dirt Head's JK

Finally getting around to posting this, but my buddy and I took up the better part of this past Sunday exploring the Jacumba Wilderness down by the border! While I’ve been in this area before, all of the routes we took were ones I haven’t taken yet, and some cool scenery (and some not so cool as you’ll see later) was to be found along the way.

Making our final fuel stop before hitting the dirt - was cool to see a Huey parked atop the station. The shop owner inside told us it was a prop used for filming of the Walking Dead in this area.

Made our way to the trailhead to air down.

Entering a boulder filled backdrop.

A rock formation known as “Smuggler’s Den,” with water jugs, food, and clothing inside all labeled in Spanish… “Buena Suerte” was inscribed onto everything which means good luck…

We’ve reached the peak!

Here’s my favorite shot from the entire trip from the peak - only accessible on foot.

On top was “Elliot Mine,” which had a vertical shaft that hoisted minerals up, and one you could crawl through that connected to you it back on the floor. Unfortunately, it must’ve caved in some time ago as it’s inaccessible now. Judging by all the quartz we found surrounding each exit, we suspect that’s what was mined here.

Now back to the border, my good friend Mathew stands here just feet away from a downed barbed wire fence of what WAS the border - and with this sign pointing towards the BP Field Office…
IMG_6720.jpeg

Getting back to where we started - we really stretched his 4Runner’s legs today! He just got a mild lift on it and is running Kings all around.

As we approached the end, we came across what made this run ultimately infuriating. Seeing this shit all the illegal immigrants decide to drop while running up through the hills. We saw every conceivable item of clothing, suitcases, backpacks, trash, books, food, hell even condoms. It’s not like anyone is going to pick all this crap up either, and this is just insanity. Shit like this was present EVERYWHERE on this part of the trail, and it’s enough to never make me want to run it again. As fun as it was to wheel through the boulder fields, I cannot believe this is the state of our border, but then again… look at the current leadership of this state and country and can.

Looked like a great day despite all the trash, lots of cool sights to see along the way. Curious, did you destroy the “asylum” signs?

Haven't been down in that area in years! Looks like a great time but infuriated to see the shit you came across!

It was good that you were able to keep up with the Toyota IFS vehicle which raised its leg the same way that a dog does to pee! 🤣

Thanks for representing us!

Uhhh I actually led the entirety of the trip and he was definitely limited by his IFS. Nonetheless, we were just both happy to be outside exploring.

Anyhow, you're welcome? I'm sure there's specific forums for said "us."
