1st Ever RallyVenture 2014

Well this was a bust apparently...

For what it was supposed to be, kind of. If they make a few adjustments to how they do things, I could see it becoming something.

Screw ratings!! At least you had a good time.

Well, if it didn't cost money to participate in this rally, I might have to agree with you. If it wasn't an invite only rally with big names participating in it, I might have to agree with you. If there wasn't a publicity surrounding it, with placements, a trophy and bragging rights to it, I might have to agree with you. It was a rally, a competition specifically designed by one of the co-founders of KOH and one designed to highlight manufacturers and vendors and while I had nothing to lose, others did and for that, I personally don't feel that a good time was enough. We could have had one without this rally. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Apparently, this "rally" was NOT a race. It was supposed to be about enjoying the northern Nevada desert and really, if that's all it was, I'd be cool with it but then, don't call it a rally or suggest that it's some kind of race by having starting positions and getting timed. Maybe call it geocaching or a treasure hunt :naw:

I agree with you here Eddie...maybe make it a scavenger hunt type thing instead of calling it a Rally. Have the competitors take certain photos of their rig parked in front of particular landmarks along the way and so on. Then at each checkpoint, their photos have to be submitted and points are awarded for the proper photos. I for sure dont get the whole "reverse" points system they used on this run.

Pretty interesting how others that participated seem to have a completely different opinion about this event. You would think this was the next big thing. They are posting all over the place about how cool it was

Yeah I noticed that too. Lot's of other people saying they had a great time and thought it was well put together... maybe they are saying positive things to kiss ass for one reason or another.

Funny you would say as much as Cindy and I were thinking the same thing. Doing something like that would be a lot more fun. The whole Facebook thing and penalties for not posting up was just lame to me. The high emphasis placed on social media and posting all the time just seemed so counter productive to the idea of getting out into the desert. But of course, that's just me.

Well, like I said, this is just my opinion and I can't even really speak for Mel on this one. All the participants know Jeff Knoll personally and they were personally invited to be a part of this event. Jeff was one of the guys who started KOH and this event was designed to be something like it. Because of it, a lot of this event was to help promote its future success and he couldn't stress enough to everyone to help him make that happen. Not that any of this is wrong or bad as it is a business for him and in a lot of ways, it's what he should do. I totally get it and am not trying to give him grief about it at all. Cindy and I were invited to be a part of this event by Mel and so we went into this without any bias, preconceived ideas or motivations to say anything one way or the other. We get nothing out of this event and lose nothing by just telling like it is. Who knows, it very well may be the next big thing but really, we do this kind of thing all the time and we prefer to do it with friends and without the need to have to post up about it on Facebook complete with specific #tags to prevent getting penalized.

To be fair, we had a good time too and I had stated as much. I just think it could have been done differently and really, that's just my opinion. While we make it a habit of posting up our trips on the forum and even on Facebook when we have time, it's because we want to share what we're doing - NOT because we are "required" to before checking into specific destinations and at specific times to prevent getting penalized for points in a "rally" that isn't a "race"

I bet it was a blast flying through the desert and just being off road. I just like how you are straight forward with your experience. Like you said, you had a good time, there were just some aspects that were not necessarily your style.

Oh yeah, riding in EVO1 blasting through the desert is a E-Ticket ride for sure and yes, there were just some aspects of this rally that weren't my "personal" style. I totally get the taking of pictures of landmarks, flowers and vistas as that is all a part of exploring. I totally get the shooting stage as well as that is something we do out in the desert too. I totally get visiting historic bars and having to answer questions about as that is something I would do anyway. But, to be required to wear a bra, take a pic of you wearing it and be required to post it up on Facebook just to get your next instruction set?? Things like that were a bit lame.... to me anyway.

Sounds to me like a poker run, not a rally.

Yep. And really, there's nothing wrong with that but, I think it would have helped to clarify as much ahead of time. Again, my biggest grief about this "rally" was that the rules were confusing as hell and absolutely no mention was made about being penalized for not posting up on Facebook. It was my understanding that you were only out to get "extra bonus points" for doing so.

Say what?!?!?

I can't make this stuff up. That was literally one of the requirements to move on to the next stage. Mel was just about to say screw it when Cindy volunteered to do it for him. They weren't happy about it and let us know but reluctantly gave us the next set of instructions :naw:

I'm surprised you didn't have to take a pic in front of a brothel.

You and me both.

Any thought to doing an adventure like trip with a WOL crew now that you have seen and done so many things out in the Northern NV area (unrelated to this talley)? Based on all of you local trips and some of the pictures you have posted, there should be a great trip that would showcase the area and be a lot of fun for the rest of us WOL geeks. Let us know and we can help. Would be fun!

Hahaha did they make up rules as they went? I would have paid to see to see Mel's reaction haha

Honestly, I don't know but it sure seemed like it. I think we got Mel on film at the moment when they told him what he needed to do but, I don't think he'd appreciate us sharing that :D

For the most part, we like to do runs where everyone is involved as a group but, this RallyVenture did get Cindy and I talking and thinking about the possibilities. You never know, maybe we could do something like it someday and without it being a pseudo race and without an emphasis on Facebook for points We'd just do it for fun.:
