1948 Willys CJ-2A

I was going to keep it 100% original, but I like to stop when it’s appropriate. 😂

I am envisioning us doing a local Old Iron saloon tour. Maybe start at Genoa and end up at Virginia City. Coming down that hill from Virginia City could be exciting with bad brakes, especially after a half-dozen+ Old Fashions!
Disc brakes up front is something I've been meaning to do for a while now on a few of my old irons. And yes, a run like that would be awesome.
 
I finally had some spare time to work on Kaiser.

The front disk brakes are installed but they would lock up when the brake pedal was pushed and not release enough to spin free- at all. I’m not talking about the normal slight drag but full contact on the rotors that would totally prevent any wheel spin.

It turns out there is a ‘Residual Pressure Valve’ built in to the master cylinder that is required for the drum brakes. After watching a couple of videos I got to work.

I’ll note that most ‘how to’ videos on the internet pale in comparison to the Wayalife content produced by @wayoflife and @CarsonCindy

The last time I removed a Willys master cylinder was circa 1981 and I was way more limber back then. 😂🤣


It’s wedged up pretty tight and right next to the exhaust pipe which I removed.

This is a single reservoir unit with separate lines for front and rear. The switch for the brake lights is also located here.

This was a real pain to remove and even worse to reinstall. The cotter pin was small and hard to manipulate.

The components don’t look too bad, eventually I’ll replace them but for now they are good.
I cleaned out the sediment and inspected the case for damage- it looked great for being 70+ years old.

This is the RPV that is causing my problems. With this sucker out my front disc brakes should release. I can always install a RPV inline for the rear brakes if needed. Eventually I’ll do rear disc brakes also, but for now I should be good. Remember, currently I use this Willys to drive about 2 miles to the local brewery and my top speed is about 25 mph.

I really like the fuel pump with the hand prime I installed. After several months of sitting in the garage- a few cranks on the priming lever and Kaiser started right up.

With the 16-inch steel wheels I needed to install wheel spacers to provide clearance for the calipers. IMG_9144.jpeg

These new brakes work great! The Willys stops immediately! No more coasting for several hundred feet before you need to stop and wondering if you would actually stop.

I like the locking hubs too. Less wear and tear as well as rolling resistance. I might even be able to break the 53 mph top speed now. At 54 mph I might need to install safety belts? 🤔

nice! no brakes on those old rigs are 1/2 the adventure and a reason to drink when you make it to your destination in one piece....
almost forgot who I was talking to, no reason needed lol
