Assuming you have tow points front and rear, a good tow strap (no metal hooks) is all you really need. A couple of shackles (preferably soft ones) will give you more options for vehicles that don't have recovery points.

As mentioned, the bar you were looking at wasn't rigid enough and allowed for too much movement. I may have been able to use a thicker and or different type of steel and make it work but the cost would have been the same if not more than laser cut tube.
