broken windshields!

I broke my windshield within 24hours of buying my Jeep - I was using a squeegee and when it went off the edge the hard part of the squeegee caught the glass and cracked it all the way across...

I got mine thru a local shop that warranties them for a year. I pay the install fee and get a new one at least once a year so far. This last one made it 2 months.

Has anyone else had a problem with stuff breaking their windshields? I didn't see another post about it. Ive replaced 3 windshields in 4 years due to rocks flying. Is there anything I could do to prevent this or is it something i will just have to deal with?

It totally sucks but is totally to be expected with a big flat windshield that sits so vertically. I've literally replaced a windshield and had to replace it again in 4 days. :grayno:

Agree with Eddie, I had to replace my windshield 1 week at I bought it. I did buy an aftermarket those and price with install was $279.00. The OEM windshield installed would have been $654.00:thinking:

I have been very lucky with my JK. About 50K miles at this point and about 38K of them are highway miles. I am lucky because I have only lost 1 windshield so far but I am waiting for the next one.

My Jeep is an '08 and my windshield has been cracked since '09 when a rock from a trailer hit it. It hasn't spread and I haven't replaced it. But it is the nature of the flat windshield to be a reflector for everything airborne. I have chips all over it. It sparkles in direct sunlight. One of these days I will have to breakdown and get it replaced.

At least replacments are cheap. I had to pay $375 installed for an oem but a 3rd party was avaliably for only $250 installed.

So glad I have a zero dollar deductible on my glass.

If you want the OEM with the Jeep emblems on it, you might as well bend over.

In the 3 years I've owned my '08 Jk I've never even cracked my windshield. Now please excuse me for a second while I frantically run to the nearest wooden object to knock on. However, my buddy loscann48 on here has gone through a crazy number of windshields. I guess it's just sheer luck that I haven't had the pleasure of replacing a windshield yet.
:bleh::thinking::bleh:

Mine is being replaced tomorrow. I had a small chip in the center from a few weeks ago. It was cold last weekend and when I hit the heat the chip spread into a horizontal crack the is about 2/3 of the windshield's width.

I asked my insurance if they would use oem or aftermarket glass. They asked me if I had the jeep grille above the rear view mirror and I said yes. Apparently that only comes on oem glass and they said because of that they will replace it with the oem.

Jeep grill above the rear view mirror is a 2011+ feature. I don't believe 2010 and down have it.

I have a very small chip in my windshield. From inside the cab it's about 1.5-2cm wide, but on the outside it feels just like a small indentation if I scratch my nail over it. It's been that way for 30k+ miles and so far hasn't spread. Been meaning to take it in and have the chip filled hoping that would clear it up.

Yep, I believe you are correct. The windshield grill started with the newer style interiors in 2011.

If you're lucky enough to have Windshield insurance (Progressive I think has that) then that's good luck. You can also go with a $0 deductible. That's a gamble though. When I asked my insurance for that, it came out to an extra $480 a year. So if you use it once you paid for it, twice and you're pretty good. I'm still on the fence on doing the $0 deductible myself... I've already replaced my windshield once, and I have a $1,000 deductible, so that's not help.

I replaced my windshield in January and I now have a good size crack snaking around. Luckily it has turned back down towards the dash so it's not messing up my line of sight. When I decide to replace this one I'll be on windshield #3. :naw:

I'm about to average 1 windshield/yr.

I even heard they were prone to crack if you put your defrost when it's too cold. Never happened to me but to a couple fellow jeeper around me.

That was how my first happened!

I have owned owned my Jeep since April of 2013. It had a few chips on the edge, but no cracks. 2 week of January this year, while it was brutally cold here in New England and I had my defrost on, the windshield just cracked, and I wasn't even driving when it happened. Windshield was in for 2 weeks when it cracked clear across from a small stone kicked up from a passing truck. Windshield was again replaced and yep 2 days later cracked clear across again from another small stone. Before I could get it fixed for the 3rd time I took a 2 hour road trio to go skiing in NH, on the return trip home I got 2 more hits from small stones! Now I'm on my 4th windshield for 2014, so far so good (knocking on wood), this one has lasted me 2 weeks. Although I was stuck behind a truck on the highway today and could hear the sand and pebbles blasting my windshield and it is now all pitted....I'm sure its now just a matter of time before this one goes. Needless to say, I am very thankful of full glass coverage with 0 deductible...and it doesn't count as a claim. Her is a picture of my last windshield after it was on the jeep for less that 2 weeks.

I didnt want them, but as I had to turn the jeep in yesterday I didnt want the inspector saying this isnt an OEM windshield... and taking the dealer install price off my refund.
