WHO DO YOU TRUST : Owners Manual or The Internet

When it comes to servicing your Jeep, who do you trust? Jeep and what they say you should do and use as stated in the Owners Manual and in order to maintain your powertrain warranty OR... the "some" on the internet who have ideas of their own? Please note, this is a sincere question and I ask it only because lately, I've been getting a LOT of them, just like this:



So, who is it that you trust?

If you have a warranty, do whatever the manufacturer says. And document and photograph it. Your warranty will be honored in a court setting. After that, who knows

Stock jeep, owners manual. Heavily modified jeep, whatever makes it not fall apart. Could be gorilla glue in the motor if thats what it takes.

No, just kidding. We all know how much stupid shit is out there. Best to talk to a knowledgeable friend and if it makes sense go with it.

A perfect example is how much oil a 392 Wrangler takes. 7qts? 7.5? 8? It depends…

Owners manual and experienced mechanics I know personally. I don’t believe the transmission should have no maintenance ever and I’ll do my oil/fluid changes before recommended.

I also find it extremely amusing at the amount of stupid shit people feel the need to improve on Wranglers that they would NEVER think of doing to their other vehicles - like how many also add an oil catch can to the family minivan? How about a Grade 8 kit on the 'ol Honda Pilot? angry eyes grill to the F150?

Pretty much in agreement with everyone so far and, having worked in a dealer setting, shit really starts hitting the fan when uneducated people turn to the internet for cheaper and easier fixes which either lead to bigger problems or create something that’s a PITA to get around and/or reverse in the service bay.

Owners manual but old school and probably unnecessary 5K mile oil changes.

Reminds me of the regular vs premium gas debate for the the 2.0T. Manual says you can run regular but recommends premium.

I trust that the internet has shown us that there are millions of people who have no fugging clue what an owners manual is.

I rely on the owner's manual, if I've been using my Jeep hard then I do fluid changes sooner for my peace of mind.

I am however going to switch the JLU to 5w-20 on the next change to see if it quiets the tick I've had since day 1. Took it to the dealer at 10 miles and they insisted it was normal, now at 135000+ miles, it's still there, not any louder, no noticeable change.

In comparison, the 2015 JK 3.6 uses 5w-20 and at idle, it's so quiet, the 2010... Fred Flintstone built that 3.8.

A little of both honestly, if questionable I stick with the manual.

When it comes to oil viscosity I don’t think I’d hesitate to go with a slightly heavier weight. One of the driving factors for manufacturers going to 0-20 oil is to gain a minute amount of fuel efficiency to help their EPA numbers.

For me it’s a mixture of owners manual and your own common sense, if you have any. Too many people out there giving advice based on opinion and not facts. Of course there are people out there on the internet I trust and who provide good information.

Oh it definitely does!
