Government employees and many government employees already carry digital IDs. Even retired military carry digital IDs so they can get on base and buy groceries.

Other governments already issue digital IDs to their citizens.

I learned more about this given that supporting authentication with them was one of my responsibilities at my last employer.

It's digital, the fake digital ID's are likely already being sold and system backdoor hack already in use
 
Yep. It would be awesome if someone were to use your ID to do nefarious things and you got to suffer the consequences. Sounds great.
The digital IDs use a challenge/response cryptographic technology. It would be extremely hard to replicate a card. The card can contain additional information to authenticate you such as your photo. There is a way to revoke a card so it can't be used any more.

These have been used by the US government for years, and also by private business. Millions of cards in use in the USA.

Regardless, many of would prefer to not have to carry ID at all. Being required to provide ID in order to travel violates our inalienable rights, and our constitutional rights as well.
