GARDENING Thread

So we red clay, which I understand is high in iron. Thinking our best option is raised beds, like Adam built, bringing in good black dirt.

What I never understood is what do you do with the harvest? You can’t possibly eat it all. Do you can it?
In Boulder City, the ground there is like concrete and the only way we can grow down there is with raised beds.

Regarding harvest, we eat a lot of it but we also grow what we can can and or store. If you can believe it, we're still eating fresh onions from last year.
Blanching and freezing is an alternate to cannng
This is a good option too ^^^

Currently the in the ground and growing are strawberries (we planted last year) and garlic which is soon to be harvested. Maybe another month. Oh and a lot of weeds.

We put the silage tarp on the rest of the garden and need to install the raised beds. Got our soil this week too. We are behind the eight ball on getting things planted. Probably should have done it last week but such is life.

Looking good and you've still got time.

Safe to assume you don't need to irrigate either?

Oh no we do. That was a big problem we ran into last year with the drought. I am thinking we are going to have another one this year but the raised beds should help combat the drought a bit. We will do drip irrigation probably next year when we finish out the raised beds and get the garden area finished. No point in doing it this year if its not done. Still have that link and list you gave me.

Were you able to get any strawberries last year or this year? We had them in Colorado but the birds got them so quickly. We ended up putting loose netting around them and it worked.

I got one. My daughter had about 100 of them. lol

They just started flowering last week and there is a a few dozen small ones out there now. Should be good eating size this week.

I tried growing potatoes for the first time last year and they didn't do so well in the heavy soil we have in Pizen, so this year I thought I would try adding in some better soil (Kick) from our local garden center.

Dumping the soil.

Seed potatoes cut and ready to be planted. I had to let them sit for a while because they were delivered just before we went out to Moab, so I hope they will still do ok.

I dug trenches, filled with good soil, planted the potatoes and then topped with a mix of native and good soil.

Yukon Gold and Natascha all planted. I hope they do better this year.

Wow... It's amazing to see all the special skills this group has! And now another one to add to the list!!

We have been growing a few small things because we are pretty space and shade constrained for now. But our biggest challenge is the fact that we are zone 3. Does anyone have advice on what works... outside a greenhouse (we don't want to go there yet, if possible)? Thank you!!

Those potatoes are perfect for planting. The more sprouts the better. We bought ours like a month and a half ago so they can sprout.

That's tough. Short of a greenhouse, you'd need to limit what you grow to what will tolerate cold or has a short growing season.

So far, we can grow the heck out of rhubarb & raspberries, and we've had some success with mint and certain types of chives but that's about it. With a greenhouse our options would be greatly expanded but we'll have to get out of our current house (that's in the works) before it happens.

If you really want gardening tips look up simple living alaska on YouTube. They grow a bunch of stuff up there in the Wasilla area but they recently moved to Tok which is even worse for growing.
