It's called a multi mount. It mounts to the trailer hitch.

Yeah I have seen these before. It has a receiver that goes into a hitch. So he must have installed a front mounted hitch. I guess it has its uses? :-/

Yeah, I really don't see the point to a multi-mount. I suppose if you only have one winch for the whole group (and everyone has a front hitch and the hookups for the battery) you can switch it between vehicles, which to me just seems like bad mojo since that's asking for it to fail and leave you all screwed. Plus, I wouldn't just leave it on the hitch like this... that seems like you're asking for it to be stolen.

I've heard some people say multi-mounts are good because you can use them from the front or the back, but if you have three sets of snatch blocks, shackles and tree savers you can still winch yourself backwards with the winch permanently mounted in the front. Or just get a buddy to use their winch or a tow strap on you. It's just not worth having your winch so low and so far forward.

There are tons of these up here in Oregon. Not really on jeeps, but very common on the farm trucks. People move them from the front, back, and also onto their trailers.

There are a lot of nice winches up here for sale that have just sat in people's garages, because they only take the winch with them when they go out.
