My dad and I are gonna tackle this trail this summer! Hopefully it'll stop snowing up there soon. Doing it in a basically stock rubicon. Anyone have any problems with stock?

Judging from that video, you would be fine stock. Might want to think about stronger sliders and higher bumpers.

Yeah this dude needs a GoPro very badly!

That trail is a brain buster for sure but FEAR is a mind killer. ;)

This is a great trail!

That first rocky section reminds me of the rocks on Devil's Punchbowl. Can't wait to get back up there!

Like said above a much better video is that of the 2011 JKX in Colorado. They do this trail and others and the camera doesn't shake like crazy.

Haha crazy? This trail is not difficult at all. Any stock suv can do it. The hardest part is in your head. You cant be scared. It is one of my favorite trails. There is a JKExperiance video of this trail, check it out!

I say crazy because he says is only for pros and he was a dumb ass lol but now I learned that is like a drive way even a minivan can go the haha

You've got this trail totally figured out. Black Bear has been greatly improved over the years due to the number of folks who miscalculated the switchbacks or had equipment failure. The results were not good. Black Bear is one way down 'cause it's so narrow and there's NO room to pass. Today it's not a difficult trail, but make sure everything is in good order before you head down. There's virtually no place to go in case of trouble. The sheer height of the shelf road makes me give it a 9.8 on the pucker factor scale. Definitely watch the 2011 JKX part 4 and check out what happened to Ali Mansour. Time for Charmin!!:yup:

In my last post above I wrote it used to be ass wipe scary. I found this "old" photo of Black Bear before the massive improvements we know today. Judging from the Jeep in the photo we're talkin' 70's timeframe. Now take Bandit's recommendation and check out part 4 of The 2011 JKX Colorado. Huge difference. Personally I still think it has a high pucker factor.

HOLY CRAP!!!.

You'd need a shovel and a power washer to clean my shorts if I had to do that run!!!!

Refering to the above Pic of course. the Video run looks almost easy like I put in an earlier post. Looks like the modified the trail ALOT!!

I agree, that trail is more of a brain test. Equipment in good working order is a must, along with the knowledge not to ride brakes. If you watch KeepItTight part 4, in one of the scenes, Eddie's tire is 1/3rd off the cliff. It's still plenty narrow in places, so if some cityslicker is sippin on his non-fat latte bluetoothing with his girlfriend on that trail, things can get ugly REAL fast.

While this video is cool, I think eddies of the jkx is way better, on top of the loss of brakes someone had as jeek said.

As said before the Black Bear is not a rough trail, I really think about any vehicle with good ground clearance can run the trail. The switchbacks are the scariest part and if you want to check out the scenery stopping is advised. Black Bear is quite a long trail with only a short portion of steep narrow trail at Bridal Vail Falls. My wife wouldn't stay in the Jeep on the switchbacks, she got out while I made the turns.

Your wife is smart. The first time we were going to run it we stopped to tank up in Silverton. The owner asked if we were taking our son with us. He was belted in, but the way the guy asked the question made me chicken out that day. We came back three years later and ran it with a '78 short wheelbase GMC. I was soaked in sweat by the time we got to Telluride. At least I think it was sweat.

Even with the improvements accidents do and will happen. Unfortunately this happened right after a rain storm. This Jeep rolled about 927' according to the accident report.
