Winch Question -how much cable is enough?

Looking at winches, for over all wheeling (woods to desert), how much cable is enough? I've been looking at the Warn 9.0Rc for it's light weight (54lb), but it's only carrying 50' of line. Is the enough?

Build will be LCG, light weight 2dr along the lines of a KOH everyman wheeler..

Thanks..

I have around 80' of 3/8 synthetic on my winch and its always been plenty, but I wheel where there are quite a few trees to grab on to. I always have my 20' tow strap if I need more distance.

I would get that winch if its what you want and carry another 50' of synthetic line as an extension if you need it.

50" on the winch and a 50' foot extension in your gear bag would work well if you like that particular winch.

That's the winch I've been eyeing for 2 years! I've never seen one on a jeep on this forum. The 54lbs seems good and it's a warn

I want a minimum of 85' on my winch and will likely carry two 50' extras. Your location says "Heartland" which is a little vague but if you spend a lot of time in thatchy woods finding anchors can be difficult. If you wheel in a heavy clay based mud you will likely need a snatch-block pull which will require more cable/rope.

This said, if you regularly wheel where anchor locations are close and try to stay out of the sticky stuff, you can make 50' on the winch work well. Especially with extra straps and cable/rope.

Kansas City, MO area... here it is snooty mud, open country.. woods can be brushy to real trees.. I want to be ready to wheel here, CO, UT, etc.. so open desert, rocks, mountains..

Can you use snatch blocks with the extension rope (new to winching) to increase leverage? What do folks do in open country for an anchor point to winch from?

Thx!

When running a snatch block, you can't have a hook or anything pass trough the block.. If you were smart about how to overcome that with the right amount of extensions/straps then it can still be done.. Just be careful not to pull that hook through the block.

As far as anchoring when there is no good trees around.. They make self digging anchors (pull pal) but I don't think any of them are very easy to use.. If you have no other options, I always have in The back of my mind that You can bury your spare tire with your cable attached... Basically make a t shaped trench and toss your tire in!

My ride- 2001 power wheel, 11" plastic tires, upgraded battery, boat sides, custom bumpers, tow hooks, new paint.

So those who say never wheel alone pass up good wheeling if they don't have someone to go with them? Not saying it is not a good idea to wheel with others when possible but depending on where you are it is not always easy to find someone to wheel with. Using common sense when solo is wise.

If weight is your primary focus, the ENGO E9000S is advertised at only 60 pounds and comes with 85' of synthetic line.
