Wide stance, yes or no?

This is a question for the guys who are running their Jeeps with a really wide setup.

Is there an advantage to having your tires stick out farther than needed? Suppose you have wheels with enough back spacing, is there any reason to get spacers? I know it looks pretty cool but does it give any kind of advantage when playing on the rocks or in the dirt? Same question goes for the full width pro rock axles.

I have it, 88" wide.
The advantage is for off camber areas on the trail. A wide stance gives you better stability.
