Is that the shifter release. So you can override the lock on the auto tranny and shift the tranny into neutral if necessary? Not familiar with the pre-11 autos.

Sitting here at work eating my lunch at my desk when I ran across this thread = free time on the computer to search around + I'm curious too.

I found another pic of that side of the console that doesn't really look like there's anything behind that spot.



The manual and auto use the same lower console. Maybe it's for something on a manual ? Access to the shifter lever mounting bracket/bolts ???

It does line up with a Torx head screw. I thought maybe it was to adjust the neutral safety switch. Guess I'm wrong.

Maybe for adjusting the shifter?
