What's Kept Us Together for 30 Years

As some of you may know, Cindy and I just marked 30 years of being married together and to celebrate this milestone, we decided to take a round about trip out to our Tin Camp and so that we can do some well needed exploring along the way. Here are a few pics from the fun we had.

As has been the case with most of our trips lately, we ended up getting a late start and as you can see, the traffic heading out of town was miserable.

Making a well needed stop to let everyone stretch their legs and take in the vastness of Nevada.

I know it's silly but I always love driving through tunnels

We had been getting hit by summer storms along the way but they eventually cleared out and gave way to a beautiful sunset.

CHEERS to finally getting out, making it to our first home for the trip and for all the fun ahead!

Ripley wasting no time making herself at home at our home for the night.

The following morning, we continued our way to the east but from here, it would all be off the Interstate. Did I mention how much we love it out here

Down in the valley, we made a stop to check out an old homestead that was settled back in the 1870s.

Working our way into the valley a bit to check out the wildlife teaming around this marshy lake.

Hard to imagine that 10,000 years ago, the whole valley was filled with water that was 200 feet deep.

Moving on to get a better view of the water.

Time to see more stuff.

Ran into a bit of traffic along the way.

But it cleared up about as quickly as we came across it.

Further to the south end of the valley, we hopped onto the old Pony Express/Central Overland Trail to continue our journey to the east.

Of course, we had to make a stop at every T-Marker we came across as we love reading passages from the diaries that are highlighted on them.

This one was located at Ruby Station and was written by Phoebe Abbott Carleton on July 8, 1864. Can't imagine how tough the people had to be back then to make an epic trip like this.

Further along the way and up the next mountain range, we made a stop over at the old Mountain Springs Station.

Here you can see a tired passage written by a Mary Ringo back in September 29, 1864.

Our next stop was at Butte Station.

All that remains of the station.

Bad camping, bad grass and very little water is what Philander Powell found here and after a 20 mile drive.

The long trail ahead.

Mile after mile, we kept pushing to the east.

Here we are making another stop and this time, at the mouth to Egan Canyon and where the old Fort Pierce Cemetery is located.

Of course, there was another T-maker here and again, with a passage from Phoebe Abbott Carleton soon after the 4th of July in 1864.

On the move again, we came across some rush hour traffic.

Back in yet another valley and with it being about as pretty as it gets.

But as is the case with Nevada, we soon found ourselves up in the mountains again and in no time at all.

Such a busy day out on the trail - more traffic!

The long drive to the top of this pass was oh so worth it - holy smokes, the view from up here was breathtaking!

On our way down the other side and with the aspens still thick and lush. I can only imagine what it looks like here in the fall - Note to self: come back in the fall!!

Here we are at a nice little creek that needed to be crossed.

But, before we did, we relented to Ripley's pleas to get out and have some fun.

Unfortunately, it was getting late and we needed to press on.

To a hell of a fun day - CHEERS!

Of course, no day is complete without a little play time before bed time.

Now, the whole point of our trip was to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary out at our Tin Camp but I think the drive out to it is where we really had the most fun. That said, here we are at long last.

I hope you enjoyed seeing all the places we visited across Northern Nevada as well as all the fun we had. In so many ways, this is what brought us together and kept us together for the last 30 years and more.
