Warn Winch Question

A while ago I read a post about a Warn winch to say away from, but can't find the post. Was it the Warn 9.5?

TIA

Actually there is a Warn Winch to stay away from, it is the VR series. Warn will even tell you these are there low end winch which have many Chinese parts. Any other series and you are good to go. The VR's are very cheap in price.

The Zeon does not fit every bumper. In fact it did not even fit the first generation Warn Elite. Great combination but be aware you may need to do some fabricating to make it fit.

I believe you are thinking of the VR series. They have China made parts to keep the cost down, sadly have heard a few cases of failure

Have you actually seen one fail? Or is this second hand? I am asking seriously because I am weighing my winch options. Thanks.

There have been a couple of reports of failures on this forum. One guy had his fail again after it was repaired if I remember correctly.
Ultimately, it's your money, and any winch COULD fail. I personally went with Warn because They have a great rep. With that said, the VR series is not fully made here, there are Chinese parts being used and imo shouldn't be badged as a Warn winch. My feelings aside on Chinese made electronic components, It's no secret that China made winches have a much higher failure rate than our fully US manufactured counterparts. Just as an example, if this winch has the same motor etc that are found in other Chinese made winches, what's gonna make it any better? The warranty? Cause that isn't gonna save your ass if the winch leaves you stranded on the trail, or heaven forbid, it's failure results in injury or death. If you just want a winch for looks or doing wheeling that doesn't ever need one, then I guess the VR would be fine. But for me, it wasn't, I bought a zeon instead.

No Worries. I understand your perspective. I am just trying to get a hold of the first hand accounts. I will dig around the forum a bit more.

In this video you'll see some of the cheaper components used in the VR series solenoid. These can type solenoids are fairly old technology and most higher end solenoids are using a more robust, weather-sealed contactor style solenoid. Hope that helps.

The solenoids in the VR shown in the video look exactly like the solenoids in my M8000
