Trail suggestions

We are taking a family vacation to the Grand Canyon national park. We are going to be Overlanding from Alabama,will be traveling Route 66 most of the way.
After we spend some time looking at the canyon south rim we plan going to Moab and maybe Montrose area before heading home.
Looking for some easy trails with good scenery. My rig is pretty much stock other than a budget boost and bumper. I don't need to give wife and kid a heartattack.
This will be our first trip out west, any suggestions would appreciated.

A nice trail around Moab is Potash Road/Shafer switchback its the backway in to Canyonlands Island in the Sky district. On they way out you can stop at Dead Horse State Park, and take Long Canyon back to Moab. All the roads can be done by any 4x4 and mostly in 2 wheel drive. Check www.traildamage.com for info and directions. Also Gateway Road runs from Moab to Delta, CO which can get you to Montrose. I do not know much on it, but there is also information on traildamage about it. I would suggest a day at Arches National Park also, worth the stop.

Are the trails marked?My wife is worried about getting lost. She doesn't want us to make the CNN news highlights. (Lost Jeepers last seen in Utah). We are planning a couple trails close to Archs national park and possibly Black Bear pass. Also can you pick up trail maps locally? I have the trail damage link. But I prefer a good old fashioned map.

Black bear pass is not for the fant of heart, and you said no heart attacks.... haha! The best thing to buy is Charles Wells books, they are very detailed with descriptions and map for each trail. www.funtreks.com You can buy them on his website or amazon or barnes and noble. If you are wanting to do some trails around Ouray/Silverton/Telluride. I would spend two days, running trails around this area. Depending on were your staying you can run Imogene Pass from Telluride to Ouray and then run Black Bear or Ophir pass. If you have never run shelf roads I would skip Black Bear Pass. The other day running Mineral Creek over to Animas Fork for lunch and then back to the highway via Corkscrew Gulch. A stock Jeep will run all of these you might scrap a the diff on Mineral Creek. The trails are somewhat marked, but lots of people travel them so if you get lost or stranded someone will be along shortly.

From Montrose, head south to Ouray and take Engineer Pass to Lake City. You can then drive back home. It is very scenic and can be completed inmost any stock 4wd vehicle. If you get to Ouray at lunch, great burger joint in your left about half way down. It is a brick 3-story restaurant. You can eat up on the roof and have great views. The actual trail, engineers pass, does not take much time to run. Very well marked trail.

Thanks for the info. May need to skip Black Bear Pass or she could walk down the switchbacks.

I highly recommend this book and the others in the series. I have the AZ edition and I'm very happy with it. Give em a look. Highly detailed info, gps coordinates and much more. Hope it helps.
