The Lost Coast

Time to contribute to the destinations thread. We didn't anticipate picture logging every single thing so the pictures are a bit scattered, I apologize. Gotta love California, when a fall storm rolls into the foothills you can escape the rain by heading to the cost. A couple months ago we set out for a scenic weekend get away for a little R&R to the lost cost. The lost cost is a section of northern california where hwy 1 pulls away from the shoreline and goes inland, leaving a portion of the california coast 'lost' to most travelers.

Headed out we drove through the first storm of the year, through a few trees, and ta da the sunny coast!







Our first stop was fort bragg to check out glass beach, the 10 mile dunes, and some areas. Back in the day residence of the area used the ocean as a landfill. The result is 3 glass beaches that are filled with sea glass. I dug down a couple feet and the glass kept on going. Before visiting we read if you can find red colored glass it's extremely rare, it is from old car tail lights. I searched for 30 minutes but found nothing. Its a pretty cool thing to see along with some local sea life.













Setup up camp, had some wine, and watched the sunset before heading to our main destination, the lost cost.

Right as hwy 1 pulls away from the coast there is an old logging road that you can take that follows the ocean side before dropping down between to ridge lines. The road is not difficult, just has awesome views. It does close in winter due to the mud and fairly steep inclines. At the bottom of the road you cross a bridge and enter some first come first serve campgrounds.

We followed the creek out to the ocean, saw some elk, spent the day relaxing and hiking around the area.

No idea what I did to make the pictures not show in the last post. Anyway, made one last stop on the way home to check out a big tree, sadly the jeep was too big to fit through.

Looks like a fun trip :thumb: Rubbersidedown and I did this trail this last summer had a blast playing I the sand at usal beach

I always knew about this place and lived in Sonoma County for 10 years and never went! lol it took moving 4 hours away before I actually got there. Really peaceful with no one around in fall.

Love Fort bragg awesome place. I spent a lot of time there. My dad and Grandpa commercial salmon fished out of noyo Harbor in Fort Bragg for a long time . Glass Beach used to be alot better before they did a huge environmental cleanup on the beach. As kids we us to fill up 5 gallon buckets of glass and would use it around the house for landscaping. The old Skunk Train was also a awesome thing to go on and see in Fort Bragg to. Cool pictures. I miss it I need to go back soon

Wow, I could only image what that beach must of been like back then. We wanted to do the skunk train but didnt have time, maybe next year! good to hear it's worth it.

Unfortunately when we went on the skunk train it was out for service. Thay have 2 trains that run it but it was still fun and i would do it again. I think in the early 2000s thay did the clean up on the beach. I can't remember the last year we where there but it had to be in about 03 or 04. we sold the boat right before the salmon fishing industry government shut down for commercial and sport fishing. I also recommend that you go to D'Aurelios it is a authentic Italian restaurant it is awesome. It has been too long haha i need to go back.
