Hey all,

i read in the FAQ that steering stabilizers aren't required if you're steering is dialed in after lifting a jeep. however even though its not required, what does it do and would it help? its a relatively cheap upgrade so I'm wondering if its worth going for.

It will help get rid of that small steering wobble. No reason to spend hundreds but having one does help.
 
This is something many people are confused about. A steering is an absolute must, just like seatbelts, from a safety perspective. They are NOT required or needed at all to make your Jeep drive correctly or smoothly.

The steering stabilizer is a shock. Every shock serves one purpose alone and that's to slow down/dampen rapid or jerky movements. The socks at the 4 corners of the jeep do exactly that as well and that's why s car feels like a boat going over waves(when you hit a bump) if the shocks have gone bad.

The steering stabilizer dampens the tire/wheel/steering shock that occurs if you hit a pothole or grove in the road and prevents you from losing control of the vehicle.

All that being said, a stock stabilizer is perfect for even the highest modified rigs and buying an aftermarket shock will not improve your ride and could actually make it worse!
 
Oh and it should never be used to cover up any steering issues. The problem should be found and corrected properly (i.e. tighten loose steering component bolts, replace a bad balljoint, balance the tires, etc.). Using a stabilizer to mask the issue is a bandaid and not a real fix!
 
Ah okay thanks so much, i wasn't sure if the stock stabilizer would perform as well after a lift. ill make sure to not touch it! thanks guys!
 
X3 keep your existing SS. Often aftermarket SS's are too strong and cause your jeep to wander one direction. I have seen this problem several times here on WAL, and the solution is always to go back to a stock SS.

FYI- I have no steering stabilizer on my Tj with 40s. I think it does just fine.


My ride- 2001 power wheel, 11" plastic tires, upgraded battery, boat sides, custom bumpers, tow hooks, new paint.
