Smokin’s JLUR build

SmokinV10

Caught the Bug
Starting from scratch. Sold my JK back in 2017 and have been through a few toys since then but always missed it.

I have a long commute to work every day and was looking for a cheap commuter to keep miles off the other cars. Originally started looking at leases on gmc canyons and base keeps. A few weeks ago I was chatting with a friend of mine who is the GM of the dealership and he told me to stop lying to myself and just get a Rubicon. Got home and called him and told “ok”. 2022 Jeep JLUR was sitting in my driveway the next morning.

So the original plan was to just buy a small rock crawler lift, add some aev bumpers and get some 37’s or 38’s with a set of gears. Shopping in this market was frustrating since everything is out of stock. Calls to friends in the industry started going out. Talking to fellow gear heads is always a bad thing to the wallet. They talked me into Evo coilovers. Then that turned into new axles. So here’s the new planned build sheet:

EVO quarter pounder
Warn Zeon 10-s
EVO rear bumper delete fascia
EVO tire carrier
Dynatrac ProRock XD 60/80 axle set (used)
17” KMC machete’s on 40’s
EVO Double Throwdown
ARB dual compressor
Oracle Oculus headlights
Quake LED’s for the OEM Fender chop

Build starts when the rear coilovers show up in two weeks.

Parts started showing yesterday so the install started this afternoon.

First I’m trying the Voswitch system instead of an SPOD. I like the OEM mounting spots better. My JLUR didn’t come with the OEM Auxillary switches. Turned out nice and has a really nice OEM look. I also installed the Oracle Oculus LED headlamps since my JLUR didn’t have this either. I’m still waiting on the Quake fender lights but will probably wait to install those with the Lift after the inner fenders come in and get powder coated. Not sure I like the Halo. They are a lot brighter than the OEM halos. That said, the beam from the Oracle headlamps seem noticeably better than OEM LED’s.

still waiting for the main parts but a few miscellaneous pieces came in. Hard wired the radar detector above the mirror. Pulled power from the cigarette lighter.. Had to buy an adhesive mount form eBay and then modify it to work with the magnetic mount on the Escort Max360. A few minutes with a file and it works perfect.

Also ordered the Rival 4x4 hood lift struts from Amazon. Nice accessory so you don’t have to use the hood prop anymore. Takes 10 min to install.

Still waiting for the rear coilovers so I’ve been working on small perforance mods to convince myself not to do a 392 swap.

the first thing I opted to try was the JB4 piggyback computer from Burger Motorsports. I tried one of these on my Audi RS7 as it was the only tune that was undetectable by Audi. That tune yielded 70whp and over 100ft-lbs of torque. Figured that this 4cyl would respond well to a tune as most turbo applications do.

ordered the JB4 last Thursday and it showed up yesterday. Fairly painless install that took about 2 hours total including me taking the time to hide and route wires for a clean install. Got it done and it works flawlessly. Peak horsepower gains are only 35 on 93 octaine but I still had half a tank of 87 so I topped it off with 93 and have been running around. In the midrange it picks up almost 90ft-lbs of torque. Massively noticeable mod and likely the best $600 you can spend. Honestly it feels like a completely different vehicle. This isn’t one of those “placebo” mods. Fantastic bang for the buck and it’s really how the little forced induction 2.0 outshines the N/A 3.6. I’m not sure it’s gonna keep me from pulling the trigger on a 392 swap but so far it’s dramarically better on stock wheels/weight.

so far I have about 80 miles post install with no issues on the 91 octane tune. Tried the 93 and felt some hesitation. I’ll wait for an empty tank and try again.

In the spirit of performance mods I also tried the “Go Fast Bits” BV+ which essentially modifies the pressure and the way the stock blow off valve manages boost pressure. The Alpha Romeo guys with this engine e swear by this mod. Unfortunately I accidentally ordered the wrong unit. I started to modify the GFB BV+ to make it fit before I repaired that there was another version that didn’t require the mods. This is the one NOT to buy.

the issue with this mod is that you have to destroy the OEM blow off valve to make it work. The part I received looks like it will fit but it’s for a different version of this same engine.

I did the modification and ended up having to head to the dealer to pick up a replacement. Part number is 04893902AB.

I’ll save the modified unit for when the new GFB part shows up. I also ordered a Mishimoto intercooler pipe and higher flow intake. That should all arrive next week.

Made some progress today. I have to thank Eddie for the time he spends making his videos. Amazingly helpful.

Rotated the sway bar motor.

installed the winch. Last mounting bolt towards the passenger side near the grill must have taken me an hour to install.

still have a ton of parts to install. Want to install the fender LED’s. Rear fascia cover is back from powder coat. EVO tire carrier has been waiting for 2 weeks now. UPS is dropping off 3 more boxes of parts on Monday

Got all the parts in and decided to make some big changes. I’ve decided to proceed with an Hemi swap but am stuck between a 392 and a Hellcat (maybe even a demon) swap. I have some concerns about hellcat cooling at low speed under load. Anyways while I’m thinking it through, the build is underway.

stock axles out and sold inside of 24 hours.

Double Throwdown going in:

since some variant of a v8 is making its way onto the Jeep before the end of the year, I decided to go with 42” Nitto Trail Grapplers on 20” KMC Beadlocks.

Changed my mind on the rubicon fender chop so I ordered some Genright tube fenders.

I started to think that the tube fenders would look better with a different bumper so I decided to ditch the brand new EVO quarter pounder (it’s for sale) and Evo rear fascia ( also for sale)

Got a motobilt rear bumper in powder coat and a genright front bumper arriving tomorrow. Just liked the styling a bit more.

ordered some lighting as well. More to come

build got slightly stalled while we wait for some missing brackets. Made some progress on a few more cosmetic items. Rear Genright Tube fenders were installed.

How long is the lead time on a set of Dynatrac axles?
I’m not sure. I’ve heard it’s > 3 months. I was lucky enough to find this set used. That’s part of why I am missing a bracket. I need a front passenger side control arm bracket as the last owner decided to do 3 link in the front. Artec hooked me up with a bracket that would work this morning that didn’t require an entire passenger side truss

the longest lead times are with King. If you look hard you can Piece together a build between Northridge, Top Tier , Accutune, Quadratec and Morris. Some items like Rockslide Engineering sliders or Rockhard’z sport cage require eBay or just patience

Some solid progress after a week or so of sourcing hard to find brackets and miscellaneous parts. These big builds are challenging far more challenging these days when only half the specialized parts are in stock and vendors are short of labor. Anyways long arm brackets were burned on:

A few new control arm brackets had to be removed and added since the last owner of these axles had a 3 link.
