Retainer clip on front driveshaft

Caught the Bug
So I rebuilt my cv joint on my front driveshaft until I upgrade it next summer. In doing so I just realized I forgot to put the retainer clip back on. How much trouble will I be in if I don't have that in place?

What retainer clip? Does it just hold the boot on or is it more like a snap ring that holds the joint together?
 
I probably wouldn't drive around like that for long. If you throw the u-joint caps on the highway that driveshaft is going to do some damage.
 
you want that snap ring in there, you don't want that section to 'walk" and start losing bearings

Yea I was thinking I would need to redo the whole joint but all I have to do is pop open the back cap and put it back in. Should be easy. Thanks for all the input guys.
