Question for the winch veterans...

I've been wheeling since I was 16 with my old man but this is my first winch and I wanted to ask something and maybe some of the guys who've been winching for a while might be able to answer this.

A friend of mine was watching a video I posted a while back where I got stuck and what the other guy did was unspool about 15 feet from the winch, lock it back and just pulled me out from the mud with his XJ, my friend told me never to do this because the gears or the drive on the winch might break.

Is this true? I would think a winch designed to pull 12000 lbs on a single line wouldn't break like that but still wanted to run it by more experienced people.

I think he means used the vehicle to pull them out not the winch. Essentially using about 15' of winch cable as a tow strap.

Unless you've got a shitty winch and it's already died on you, I wouldn't suggest that method. :cheesy:
