Paint for sliders?

Just ordered some Evo boatside bombers from Exodus. Thanks Bubba! What primer and paint combo do you guys use when painting your sliders? I was going to do powdercoat but everything I’ve read says if you play in the rocks you’re better off painting. Thanks.

For those personally I'd powdercoat the skins at least.
Wouldn't want rust to form between the skin/jeep.

For the actual slider - just some Rustoleum will do the job.
 
I just got my sliders in today, here is my plan. I am using the POR 15 3 step process first. So, degreaser, metal prep then paint on the POR 15. Hopefully this prevents rust. Then I am using Rust-Oleum 248914 Automotive 15-Ounce Truck Bed Coating Spray, Black.

I rattle-canned both my skins and my sliders. Key is using a good metal etching primer first. IMO powder coating sliders is pointless if you plan on leaning on them offroad. Every Winter I hit them with a wire cup on my angle grinder and redo for the next season. PC'ing the skins does make some sense, I just didn't want to bother waiting so I sprayed myself.

Im not sure if Por prevents rust. Its more of a rust stopper. It also dries extremely glossy so you will have to scuff every inch if you want any rattle can to stick. You may just look into a self etching primer.

What Ddays said... Good etching primer & spray... personally, I use an engine paint like VHT or Dupicolor engine enamel in low gloss or semi gloss on all my chassis parts.... for some reason I feel like the engine paint is tougher and lasts longer.
 
This is the paint I've used. I get it at my local auto body/paint supply store. It holds up well to everything except rocks ;) I picked this because of the finish - its an eggshell, not flat, and it touches up really well. Honestly, most paints will hold up well with the right surface prep.

I'll give my $0.02, what the hell.

I had everything PCd. My skins came powdered. My EVO slider came raw and it was less than $200 to powder. My thinking is that a base of PC is going to hold stronger/longer than a base of rattlecan. Many folks have had the spray flake off, especially if you have the low angle sliders as a step.

That all said, you still have to maintain and touch up your sliders if you play in the rocks at all. I generally sand any scratches and rust. Hit with some auto primer and then rattle can. I have used both rustolium premium enamel and VHT roll bar paint. Both good but I gravitate toward VHT now because of the matte finish and that it has primer built in as additional protection/hold factor.

Been happy with the above and don't regret spending a little bit on PC at first.
 
Self etching primer, and a roll on rustolium flat paint. No problems with rust anywhere, and the roll on makes for easy touch ups.

POR is a waste. It stops rust. You use it on frames that are already rusty. To put it on a new product is kind of useless.

Hey, thanks OverlanderJk, I am going to take your advice along with others and just use the Rust-Oleum etching primer and the Rust-Oleum truck bed liner flat black. After I wash them with dawn dish soap as a Degreaser.

I've done both this ^ and powder coat.

I now prefer to powder coat and touch up with paint as needed.

The paint fades and wears off where it gets stepped on along with the rock rash but easy to touch up.

The powder coat doesn't fade/wear as fast and for the rock rash portions, I hit it with some Rustoleum.

I've found the Rustoleum black matches the powder coat and it's an easy touchup with easy prep to keep the rust at bay.
 
Some of you guys are crazy. Rustoleum self etching primer (the green stuff) and satin black. Tough as nails and costs $4 a can. The white clean metal primer doesn't hold as well.

Powdercoat is a waste of money and once it starts flaking off, it's hard to stop it. My rear bumper is peeling from every rock hit.

After a trip in the rocks, I shove cardboard between the body and sliders and hit it again with satin black.

No coating is going to hold up to rock rash.
