Not enough time to buy?... Build it!

So I'm days away from Ouray and spent my cash on axle sleeves, auburn locker, g2 5.13 gears, 37" tires and DAMN.... Totally spaced about a tire carrier!!
I put aside my rocker panel project and knocked this temp tire mount out of 1/4" aluminum. Two of us jumped up and down on the tire after mounted and no one got hurt!
So.... If you have the means... Remember the ol' saying..
BUILT, NOT BOUGHT

Oops

Looks solid, but I would still add some bump stops or a support. The factory carrier itself was never a weak point but rather the tailgate itself. Temporary I'm sure your fine but make sure it doesn't wiggle and start to degrade the integrity of the tailgate

Here's what I fabbed up for my tire support. View attachment 153329

This is the more important tire support.
Not to knock your project OP( love the fact you made your own) but you actually added to the problem! What are you running for your new spare? What is in the picture?
The most important thing to address is tire movement!! That's why everyone will suggest Daystar Bump stops, etc. I've run a 37" on my factory set up with no problem!!! That's with a heavy slab wheel....

I agree way worse. Ever try to get a bolt with a small socket wrench and can't get it so you grab a longer wrench to get leverage. Yeah well by extending further from the gate you have just added leverage to the already weak gate.

and this is how spot welds on the tailgate break which leads to people blaming the stock carrier not being strong enough.

I like your fab work but you just made it worse for yourself.

I agree with you both and that's why I said it's a temp. It will be used for the next week and a half but that's it. If a spot weld breaks, I'll re-weld it.

Go wheel the hell out of it and have a good time. If the damn thing breaks throw it in the back or on top and proceed.

I don't think a 37 will rest on the stock bumper. It will contact not allowing the spare to be mounted to the stock carrier.

I would have removed the bumper and fabricated a support like above, but I like the no rear bumper look.

That was exactly the problem Big B. I'm going to build a new bumper with carrier after our trip. I have faith this will hold for the trip... Or I'll be down a tire with video of it rolling down to telluride, lol
