Is there a generally recognized "most scary or dangerous" and "most difficult" 4x4 trail in the U.S.?

eh, the term "most" is pretty subjective and you'll get a lot of different opinions on it especially being that people have different ideas of what "scary" or what "dangerous" really is. If you mean in terms of life threatening, I suppose a lot of people would say Black Bear Pass in Colorado as people have died on it and as recently as a few years back. Having said that, I have been on it and on other trials that I personally think were scarier.

Some trails at the hammers, carnage canyon and fordyce are all pretty hard from what I've read and seen in person.

I agree with WOL. Dangerous and difficult are not always synonymous. Climbing a five foot boulder on flat ground might be very difficult, but at worst you may flop. Taking one side of an already off-camber Jeep over a one foot tall boulder on the side of a mountain may seem easy, but doing it incorrectly could be deadly.

For me, negotiating rocks while off-camber on exposed slopes shoots my pucker meter way high, even if its technically "easy".

I've been in a rollover at about 25-30 mph. It wasn't fun and it's definitely not something I feel like repeating down the side of a mountain.

I agree with Sharkey. The most "dangerous" offroad trails I know of are in southern Arizona near the Mexican border. Why are they dangerous? You run the risk of being shot by snipers hired by the drug cartels.

I think pucker canyon in Stoddard Valley is crazy dangerous:

Any trail that is over the capabilities of your rig or yourself.

I think this is the best anwser to your question. I was running trails down in Moab lest then a month after getting my first Jeep. The only Mods I had done to the 2010 JKUR at the time was a TF 2.5 BB, and midwith bumper. I was so knew that I ended paying one of the Guides to take be on trails. (Didn't know anyone to go with. It was $$ but will worth the money) I did all the driving, but he knew the trails, and was use to spotting people that had never been on trails before. He had several rigs, but took his JKU since that's what I was driving. That way I could see someone in a JKU do it before I tried it. I have since been back to Moab many times, and run some of the same run some of the same trails with bigger tires, and all around more built up Jeep. Along with being having better capabilities, more trail time, and more wheel time myself. The same trails that I was white knuckling on my first trip. I found to be much easier and less scary with a well built Jeep, and have more capabilites myself.

That's a insanely easy looking trail....X2 on the bad line chosen. Maybe the picture is deceiving but sure doesn't look bad at all.

no doubt.. especially with a non flexing leaf sprung YJ.
it's blind when you come over it though so if you don't have a spotter you just cant see where to go

I was right in front of this when it happened.

Am I missing something or is there absolutely no need to be up on that rock pile? Seems to me both drivers should have been a few feet more to the driver's side to just avoid that rock pile altogether.

A man's got to know his limitations.
Oh wait that works on the movie thread too.

Yes I think Black Bear Pass. It will make you check your pants during certain road conditions.

It does look easy in the pics. For reference.. Read the story of spooners canyon at the hammers... This is the only pic I have from that Gillian's island type trip:

This was also me when I got too near the edge in tellico a while back

Notice a theme of good roll cages and me still around.
Pucker canyon scares me every time.

Yeah this was cleghorn earlier this year. Claimed he had a lot of experience but it didn't appear so when he said he didn't air down and chose this line. He was in the group in front of us.
