First the obvious... the looks are somewhere between ass and Megatron. But I'm actually considering a set of these for a couple of reasons:
1) The beam pattern is fantastic.
2) The main reason I'm considering them is to reduce (or avoid) the icing over issues that JK LED's face. I've heard these headlights don't have as much trouble with this because they're sort of "pointy", and the smaller lens tends to concentrate what little heat there is.
I considered going with a heated setup like Trucklites or JL's but a couple of things concern me... 1) more expensive than super 7's, and 2) Given conditions in AK, heated lenses don't always keep up, and the JK sunken headlight shape in general is not good for keeping ice & snow out.
That said, I don't have personal experience with heated LED headlights in AK so I'm working from information I've "heard". AK conditions are so hard to deal with in this area... we consistently get our share of "sierra cement", which can be followed by sub zero temps within hours. Or if changing elevations (which I do constantly where I live), you get the wet snow at 2500 ft, then immediately drop into the valley where your house is, and it's -3F so the slush on your headlights turns rock hard. Note that AK temps and elevation changes are opposite what I was used to in the lower 48... low temps are in the valleys, and higher temps are above the tree line quite often.
That brings me back to the super 7 and its fugly but possibly practical design. Since it "mechanically" lends itself to staying clear rather than relying on a heating element or hot bulb, and is also less likely to be affected by snow accumulating in the recessed headlight area... I'm wondering if it's the best option for my weird situation.
What do y'all think? Am I way off base here? If so, I'm happy to be corrected. Never cared a whole lot about "aesthetics" on my jeep but these things are a bitter pill. Though I'm quite willing to do it if it'll solve my issue.
