Lightforce lights

So I keep having an issue with some Lightforce HID spot lights that came with my Jeep mounted to the front bumper. I didn't have the ballast kit but a buddy of mine had a set. The ballast kit seemed to have the correct specs for the lights and got them working. At first we wired the kits in the engine bay and got one to turn on. Thought about it more and realized they probably need to be closer to the lights and re-wired directly off the lights. Worked prefect and super bright. Tried them the other day and they were still working. While leaving work tonight flipped them on to adjust them and only 1 works.

So here's my question. What are some issues everyone has experienced with these lights and how did you fix them? Based on some of the details I've described, have we done anything wrong. I don't think the lamp is burned out. Gonna check tomorrow in the day light.

I had LF 170's (not HID) and loved them. I'm not sure about the HID's, but I vaguely recall that the LF lights are wired with reverse polarity. Not sure why it worked and then stopped, but you might want to make certain the polarity is correct.
 
I don't know much about electrical but I'll run that by my buddy. He's pretty knowledgable about this kind of thing. It's just weird to me that they worked fine for about 3 weeks. How water proof are the ballast kits in general? The set we are using probably aren't the best quality and we had some rain last week. They did work after it rained though so that's why I'm confused.

The LF ballasts have a long lead and are intended to be mounted under the hood and away from weather. If you hooked up some cheap ballasts and left them exposed I could certainly see them failing a few days after getting wet. Sometimes water kills things immediately, other times it's the subsequent corrosion that does you in.

Why not just get the ballasts that are made for the lights? It may cost more but it would be worth it to have matched quality parts.
 
The ballasts I'm using were more of a quick fix so I could have them running out in the desert for my last trip a few weeks ago. I was going to look into getting Lightforce ballasts at some point but was hoping I'd get more life out of these.
