La Posta Truck Trail / Thing Valley / Fred Canyon

Last weekend, I drove out to Campo, about an hour east of San Diego to explore La Posta Truck Trail, Thing Valley, and Fred Canyon. I didn't run into anything that challenged my mostly-stock JKU, but there are some fun sections of semi-steep, rocky trail that will keep you smiling. The views are pretty awesome too.

It only takes a couple of hours (at most) unless you decide to hang out along the trail. I recommend exploring this trail from Old Hwy 80 where it meets La Posta Road, traveling north. The forest service has gates closed, which makes navigating rather easy. La Posta Truck Trail is a well maintained gravel road which would put you to sleep if it wasn't such a pretty drive. When you hit the closed gates and head up Thing Valley Road to the northwest, it gets fun. From that point on, you're on proper jeep trail with lots of views to the south and east.

At the end of the trail, you end up at Cibbets Flat campground which is a great place to have a bite to eat. In the spring, kitchen creek flows through this campground, making it especially nice.

They close these trails sometimes depending on fire danger or muddy/slippery conditions, so check trail status before you go there:
