I HATE Leaks!

I don't know if it's just because everything is getting old or just that it's been so cold but lately, I feel as if I've been spending a lot of time chasing down leaks on Moby. I get one fixed only to find another springing up somewhere else! Needless to say, this is how I've been spending my day.

Last time, it was a hose that got chafed through. This time around, it was just a bad o-ring.

Hopefully this will be the last of the power steering leaks so that I can spend some time tracking down my T-case leak :naw:

Good nite Eddie what other leaks have you been finding and it could be the cold I think it can cause o-rings to become brittle and hoses to crack

That has to be annoying for sure, how did you find the ps leak? Can you use dye or anything? Or just look for drips here and there

So far, I've had to fix a few leaks and all in regards to the power steering. I think with this last o-ring, I may have finally gotten them all. Guess we'll see in a day or so. From what I can tell, I've got a couple of leaks on our Atlas - one right were the speedometer gear would normally be on an old school Jeep and then one right where it bolts up to the transmission adapter. More than likely, the later is a bad seal and I may end up waiting to fix that one.

Best way is to thoroughly clean and dry everything related to the steering system. This would include the pump, reservoir, steering box, hoses and all the connections. Let it sit over night and the next day, you just have to trace where the new wet spots are coming from.

I gotcha only time ol tell

I currently have a continuous wet spot around the bottom portion of my rear diff (d44). Looks to be originating around the bottom cover bolt. Its torqued to spec. Its not enought to drip on the floor but enough to keep the housing wet. The bottom of the diff has pretty good belly rub on it. Would you try and repair it, or upgrade diff covers?

How old is the gasket? Maybe it was kind of weak there & time just took its inevitable toll. Gravity's been trying to suck the oil through since the day it was added.

Sounds like your gonna have to change the gasket anyway. I would upgrade. I just ordered a new cover for mine from a guy I order a lot of parts through. I'll post pics when it comes in. Never heard of them before but a buddy recommended them: http://www.bluetorchfab.com/collect...ts/btf-dana-44a-kryptonite-differential-cover. That's the one I just got I believe. Pretty affordable IMO.

Jeeps are suppose to have leaks, that's how you know you still have fluid!

When it's stops, that's when you should start to worry ..

I'm all about using aluminum where I can, but I think my diff cover is one place I'd stay away from. Just my opinion.

The doctor changed my Cholesterol medication and Dang I hate leaks. My wife the laundry lady hates them worse hahahaha

Lol. It is steel. My D44a differential HOUSING is cast aluminum with steel tubes. I think Chrysler only used it on the GCs and the vipers, not sure why. The cover I'm installing is steel though, and supposedly BTF is the only company that makes one for the D44a aluminum housing.

Gotcha. Missed the HOUSING part in the link.

:cheesy: I thought that only applied to old Jeeps!

Truth be told, that's about how I'm starting to feel about my Atlas leaking. To fix it would take nothing short of removing the front long arm brackets and removing the cross member just to get to the nuts securing it to the transmission adapter. Being that the daytime high temps have only been about 30, letting it leak like an old school Jeep is sounding more and more appealing.

Fuck that, I would just keep topping it off!

LOL!! Yeah, that's what I'm starting to think too.

Funny how gear driven transfer cases all seem to leak. All my current and past old Jeeps that had transfer cases like a Dana 300 all leaked and so does my Atlas. None of the chain driven transfer cases ever leaked unless the housing was cracked

I just fixed a transfer case leak that I couldn't find the source for, no seals in the area of leak and it was on top. My fix kit was this, hasn't leaked anymore. :D :

I suspect it was a small casting crack.
