If you own a Jeep Wrangler JL, you may be annoyed by Engine Auto Start Stop System, also referred to as ESS. Sure, you can press the button on the dash to defeat it every time you start the engine, but we found a way to disable the system so you simply don't have to deal with it. Best of all, it's free and easy to do!
Under the hood, there are two pin switches that communicate to the vehicle's computer. The one closer to the driver-side appears to only be used for the auto start stop feature. By disconnecting the wire harness from this switch, you defeat the start stop system. On our JL, we found that a warning message appears briefly in the instrument panel when we start the vehicle, and then disappears. The ESS symbol stays on, but that doesn't bother us. We have not found anything else that disconnecting this hood pin affects.
This is the first in a series of short tech tip videos for the Jeep JL that we are producing. We hope you find them useful!
