I have a 1947 Willys CJ2A with the L134 engine. CANNOT get it to run below 230° !!!!!!! Have gone through 4 engines 6 rebuilds and $8000.00!!!!!!!!

This is what I have done, 2 new water pumps, 3 different 160° thermostats with 5/16th holes drilled in the sides, new electronic distributor, installed a bypass from head to water pump, fresh professional rebuild and install, new 3 core radiator, with shroud, shroud extension, and seal kit, 4 pound radiator cap!!!!!!!!!!

What am I missing?!?!?!?

Have you changed the gage? sounds like maybe the gage maybe off, but then again I could be wrong.

A few things to check.

Make sure they removed all of the FME plugs that they might have installed in the water/cooling ports during the rebuild.

The other thing to check is if they had to make new gaskets that they cut the center holes in them for the water to flow through.

Thanks for the info guys. The builder wants me to bring it back to Houston he doesn't understand either. So another full day driving to Houston on Saturday.

Okay so we have covered a lot of possible things,
Now for my 2 cents (all it is worth)

How is the condition of the radiator hoses? I have seen a sort of double wall hose like delaminate in the middle and reduce flow like crazy. Also have seen hoses that are weak and for whatever reason they squish closed or way down when they get hot.

What is the coolant you are using? If it is a concentrate do you have the mix correct? I had a old Dodge 440 magnum that if you tried to run it with too high of a concentrate it would get real hot.

If the motor has been bored out and the water jacket gets too thin then you will also have this kind of problem.

Like the other guy said I would tend to think it is a gasket issue but you think it would have been caught by now.
When you pull the head off do you see a place where it is kind of swelled up looking where there is a passage on one side?

I love a problem like this. (A good mystery) Once you figure it out please post back up and let us know what it was.
Don't let it get to you and drive you too nuts. Just take your time and think about it calmly. It will come to you.

Hope some of this helps, good luck with it.

Thanks tree frog,
The radiator hoses are new and both the top and bottom have springs to prevent them from collapsing. I am using 50/50 premixed coolant. I will check about the gaskets, to see if they used preformed gaskets or gaskets made there.

Noroad, I have the stock 4 blade fan. I tried an electric fan early on but it made no difference.

Mattalpha, I will ask about the fme plugs.

if you just pored new coolant i bet there is air if you didnt run it with through the right way.

Noroad, well this time I didn't put the coolant in the engine the builder did. I was told about that during the previous attempt so I jacked the front of the jeep up before I put the coolant in.
