Have you ever used your snorkel?

Show of hands if you've ever only made it across a body of water because you had a snorkel.

Just curious if most are for looks or they actually get used. I know, better to have it and not need it, but I'm curious.

I'm getting one, probably won't use it much but here in Houston there a lot floods and it floods fast. I seen cars floating under highway bridges. I been threw a hurricane out here and that was bad.

Snorkel is great for keeping water and other bad things out of the engine proper, but if you submerge the electronics in the engine compartment for more than a moment or two it's been my experience that it causes all the main smoke to come out of them and the vehicle stops. This assumes that specific measures weren't taken to seal all the magic smoke inside the electronic components.
I have not sealed mine, and did submerge my 2015 JKURHR to the hood...briefly...in standing water. What happened, I'm not sure, but it took 3 hours before it dried out enough to start again. Ran like crap. The dealer replaced my ECU and the navigation module of my head unit. Warranty of course as I only had 9k miles at the time.

I've used mine more than once. Never had any issues with the electronics.

How deep have you had it to actually use the snorkel? Pics? I love the way they look but cant imagine going in water deep enough to actually NEED one. Whats the 'line', so to speak, where a snorkel is actually in use? Hood, headlights?

I wish I had pictures. If you're going hood deep or even close you're pushing the chance to lock your motor. I've had mine mirror deep once and just above the hood line. I would rather be safe than sorry is why I got it in the first place. When I got it I only had 2.5 lift now I'm at 5" lift so I really don't need it as much. But it looks cool so I'm going to keep it.

LOL, I hear you brother! Houston is one of those area that a snorkel makes more sense for ON-ROAD almost more than off-road. I've heard enough "stories" about splash ups from relatively shallow water hydro locking engines to make me nervous. The low-mount Rugged Ridge kit would be a good option for everyday driving but I've read mixed reviews.

Good luck getting a show of hands of someone who really "needed" one here in America and be able to prove it. Of course, wanting to have one to horseplay isn't the same thing as actually "needing" one but of course, that's just me. :yup:

Ha. Need as defined by "I want to cross this body of water. Now I can because of my awesome snorkel." :)

LOL!! I guess I'd like to see what "body of water" are you referring to. Maybe it's just me but you'd be surprised at how deep your Jeep can go but of course, being "smart" about it and knowing how to properly ford a body of water will make all the difference.

That was actually the first wayalife video I ever watched. And yes, a good reminder of how deep you'd have to go to need a snorkel. If I remember, he was on 35s in that clip right?

Yup, just 35" tires. I have seen JK's go even deeper but they ended up having issues with their seat belts. If the wiring gets wet, they will short out and they will prevent you from using your seat belts. It's a real pain but your engine will still work just fine. In other words, even if your engine could go deeper, you'll still have other problems. Of course, I have personally seen plenty of Jeeps go through much shallower water like an idiot and hydrolock their motors.

LOL yeah you know, I hydro lock two Mustang been stuck all day in a car garage cause the bottom was flooded. Really? That the one I was going to get.

In Australia it considered almost mandatory to have a snorkel. Most 4wds are even sold new with a bull bar and snorkel! Having said that I'm on my second jeep and I've never 'needed' one. The closest I've come was getting stuck on the beach at Bribie Island with the tide coming in quickly and all 4 lagoons running out. The water depth at the crossings rose over a metre in an hour! I had water briefly over the bonnet a couple of times dropping in because of the steepness of the banks but got through ok.

As long as you're moving and the doors are on the electrics won't get wet.

Is bonnet Australian for hood? :)

I do appreciate the insight. Here in Colorado I'm thinking I don't need it.
