Free-time Door Carrier Build

I finally found time last weekend, and with nice weather actually here, preparing to take the doors off and I have seen a lot of good door carrier ideas. Just though I would post up what I built in case anyone wants to try something similar. I used an old bike rack for the idea. The total cost was about $50 to build and took about an hour. Mine is a 4-door but you can modify for a 2-door.

Materials:
4 - 10' 1" Schd 40 PVC pipe (if you don't want 10' I did find 5' sections at Lowe's too, you'll need 7 of them - they do fit in the back of the jeep easier!)
2 - 6' 4"x4" posts
10 - 1" 90 degree slip elbows
1 - 8' 1" pipe insulation
1 - 1 3/8" wood bit

I measured out the 4x4 and placed marks centered at 3", 15", 27", 39", and 51". I then cut off the 4x4 at 54". The additional piece I was using a slip support for the narrower rear doors (I did make a spacer but its not needed the structure is solid without it). Using the 1 3/8" wood bit, drill holes about 2" deep into the 4x4 at the listed measurements (3, 15, 27, 39, 51).

Cut 10 sections of 30" long PVC pipe for the vertical arms and for the top cut 5 - 18" sections. You can either assemble the PVC stand off the 4x4's or place them together on the 4x4's. Install the pipe insulation on the horizontal cross member.

Optional: I didn't glue anything together because I wanted to be able to disassemble it completely to save some garage space in the winter but it also fits in the back of the jeep with the seat down and can travel. (sorry, but when I finished it up I didn't get a chance to take a photo with the doors in it; and I am not by any means a photographer!).
