On the way up to Tahoe, we decided to take a detour up U.S. Route 6, head up and over the White Mountains and explore some of the cool ghost towns in the remote Nevada desert. Here are some pics that we took from our side trip.

Turning off on to U.S. Route 6 and heading out to Nevada...

Down from the summit, we headed north off pavement and stopped at the old mining town of Columbus. Originally settled back in 1865, Columbus served as the main residential and commerce center of the Candelaria Mining District until about 1976...

In spite of the its peak population of about 1,000 people, a post office, newspaper and business of all types, you can see that very little remains of this town now...

Like many of the homes you can find in ghost towns in the area, fuel tins were flattend out and reused as a nice siding...

Thank you for posting Candelaria Cemetary.

The photo of the two crosses in the joint grave site are my husbands great great grandparents. The other headstone to the left belongs to a direct ancestor too. We would like to travel and visit this area soon. Your photos are fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing. Gives us a great tour of the area.

Great photos and a cool side trip. Lots of history and fun trails all over that area. To the south of Candelaria is the pipeline that made it possible for the town to be productive at mining. When you have time Queen Canyon is worth a visit.

Interesting to see the miners there used tin cans to build their shelters. Here in South Africa the favorite was GIN bottles. The where all square working like bricks.

LOL!! We have homes that were built like that too only they were made out of beer bottles. This home stands in the ghost town of Rhyolite.

I think we were at SEMA when you posted this and just now saw it for the first time! That's amazing that the graves in our photo belong to your husband's great great grandparents. I'm so glad to know that you were able to see and enjoy our photos. If you can get out to this area, I would recommend you do it sooner than later. Unfortunately, more and more people are starting to find and what's left out there is starting to feel the effects of it.
