Starting two years ago the Forest Service set opening dates for each trail, the date for Dusy is August 1st. The reason given is to protect the Yosemite Toad and another frog. The date was set to allow time for the frogs to move into their foraging areas(And out of harms way)before the trail opens in an average year. It's a rigid date and doesn't allow for opening early when the conditions are right early.
The trail ranges from 8,300 ft to 10,170 ft above sea level and can get a lot of snow in some years. Before the opening date I saw it open from late June to late August, depending on snow conditions. The first year of the August 1st opening date it didn't open until August 19th because of a heavy snow year. So that year was less than 3 months due to mother nature, not the Forest Service. This year it could have opened mid June if it wasn't for the date(That's what would have happened before they started going by set dates). It closes November 1st because it's already very cold at that elevation by then, and storms are already starting to roll through.
Info about new toilets for Dusy.
