So A good friend of mine is about to drop 2000 on his 30. I'm trying to convince him otherwise. Any good ideas or pointers I can pass on to him?

It's a straight 6 on 35s.

I would start by telling him that the internals aren't designed for that. Doesn't mean it hasn't been done, but why take the risk. If it breaks, he has no way to get that money back. What kind of Jeep is it?

let him do it. the best way to learn is the hard way. :bleh: he will do more research on the next one he builds.

This is what this guy is telling him to do.

Detroit locker. 4.10s. Sleeve and gusset. It'll beef up my axels. I'll do chromoly axles down the road

It's a TJ. And ya just over 2000. He wanted to lock it too but I talked him out of that I think

I believe the TJ is a low pinion axle which I have heard is weaker, hopefully someone else will chime in on that. Don't do the locker with 35s.

Again, no locker. I have no experience with sleeves, but logically it makes no sense. Putting a tube inside of a tube doesn't seem to do much IMO. Also a 4.0L with 4.10s and 35s is going to be pretty weak. He'd be better off going with a higher gear ration, but the gears will be smaller which makes it even stupider to run 35s.

Yep I agree. Right now the problem is that the gearing doesn't match the rear. so I'm telling him to just match the gears and save for a better axle.

If he decides to go 44 up front, how much do you think he can get back out of his built 30? Very little $$ I'd say.

Exactly. Not a huge market for beefed up 30s. Most people with the coin are going to just buy a 44 or 60.

Alright it's done. Good work guys haha. He is going to gear and leave it open. Then just save for a 44

I think he'll be happier in the long run and that's the right way to do it. I was at that crossroads not that long ago. I'm gonna run my 30 open with the 4.56s. If it ever breaks, I'll be getting a 44.

Thanks for the help guys! Showed him this thread. The guys at 4 wheel parts were just trying to sell him shit. As usual.
