Dana 30 axle ring and pinion question

So I was just thinking about i want a new front axle so bad and how I hate my Dana 30 but I have to wait till I save up. But my question is does the ring and pinion wear over time and then eventually break or is the break caused by one incident.

Most of the time it chips under stress and then the chips end up getting in the way stripping the gears.

The R&P on the Dana 30 is the weak link!
Shock load is what will cause it to grenade!
