Clayton long arm kit

I was wondering if anyone was running a Clayton Long Arm kit? They are local here in CT and was wondering if anyone had experience or opinions on them. I am a long way from the lift upgrade / change and looking at all viable options. Tango Yankee.

For what jeep? If you put it in the appropriate section you will get specific answers. Being in the general thread people could answer about TJ, JK, CJ or whatever else Clayton makes.

The Clayton long arm kit is a radius arm kit I believe.
They're adjustable "short" arms are very stout and as you said, made here in CT.
I've gotten the feeling that all their stuff is well respected though. Just do your research if you decide to go with the Clayton long arm.

I have a Clayton long arm on a Jk. I have only had it on for about a year now and wheeled it probably ten times. I have not had any issues with it and it seams to be made with quality materials. I had some questions for Clayton and there customer services was excellent. I have had other lift kits over the years on trucks and this kit is made better then all of them by far, but this is my first Jeep and I am finding out that you need to do your reseach before you buy anything, because there are several good brands out there that I did not know about when I bought mine. Saying that, I am satisifyed with mine so far, but not alot of time to test it out. My only advice would be if you go with clayton, that you make sure and weld on the brackets and not bolt them. The bolting is a real pain in the ass. I ended up doing them as the instructions say, then went back and welded them on.

Appreciate the general feedback on clayton kits, that is what I was looking for. Definitely want a weld on kit as opposed to bolt I because that just seems more solid I my little head..... could be wrong I guess,

I am running their long arm kit in my LJ

Installed Summer 08 and I have put over 60k miles on it since.

The service from Clayton was great.

It is stout and takes a beating with hardly an issue.

The only "weak point" I found was the tranny mount/subframe that the main skid plate goes on. The cross braces could use a bit more strength. I broke 2 off at the frame rail and the other two were half way gone. It is now welded up and rebraced. And a 3rd brace was put in. There is an Atlas 4 Speed in there, so the extra weight shifting about on it probably does not help.

I recommend the full skid plate package engine and belly to go with the suspension. I have rolled over boulders on it and only scratched the paint. It is a nice a smooth bottom front to back. The way the main pan wraps around the frame is also nice. Though I did drill 3 drain holes in the main pan. One under the tranny mount and two further back and to the sides. It is wet and muddy here and the drain holes help drain the pan. I learned the hard way.

I have not found their radius arm to be restrictive. The amount of travel it has is incredible. The front shocks run out of travel long before the arms bind. I have since outboarded the rear shocks for a variety of reasons. I run out of shock about 6" before the axle binds. I am running a 30" long shock and have relocated the axle mount up quite high. I have played on an RTI ramp and have achieved an honest 1400 on the ramp. 37" tires too. This was before the anti-rocks and some further bump stopping though.

My LJ is on the heavy side with the armour and Genright safari tank. The Clayton coils were not up to the task of the weight. I have since relocated the rear upper mounts so that the coils are now vertical to eliminate that bend. I also swapped in Rubicon Express 4.5" coils that seem to be standing up to my weight a lot better.

My kit came with the quick discos for the front. I ran them and nothing in the rear for a few years. I have since swapped that out for Currie Anti-Rocks front and rear. What a difference! Should have done that much sooner.

I am not alone here with Clayton. I have two friends with the same long arm in their LJs, no issues. One TJ with their short arm kit. And we have another LJ with a Clayton long arm pending install. And I think a XJ long arm conversion happening soon too.

I think they all saw what mine has been though and no failures, where as other long arms in the club have had annoying issues.

Thank you for the detailed response and great information. I have yet to hear much bad about clayton. Definitely leaning toward them

I've known him and his work since 2000 when his main offering I believe was for ZJ/WJs. Always high quality and great customer service. Had their kit for my old ZJ. If the TJ kit is half as good then you should be pleasantly surprised.

Sent from a a few tin cans and some string.
