Checking out the Snow around Ouray Colorado

A couple weeks ago, took the wife on a tour of the new neighborhood around Montrose and went up to Ouray to walk and shop the town and then a drive up to Red Mountain Pass to check out the snow and beauty.

State Highway called 'Million Dollar Highway' but they couldn't afford guard rails on the 500 foot cliffs...

Mountain sheep just outside town licking the salts off the asphalt.
Hope you enjoy the pics of a small part of SW Colorado...

There's no gaurd rails so that they can clear the roads. They throw the snow off the side of the mountain.

Sweet pics by the way. [emoji106] We were there in July.

My favorite Colorado town!! That's where my wife and I fell in love with the JK's. After renting jeeps there year after year we decided to get our own. [emoji4]

I'm driving up there from Mississippi, in my Jeep to do a little light trail driving & sight seeing in June. No lockers yet, so nothing too hard.

Guardrail question was answered, but the name of the highway comes from the view (million dollar view), not the budget. ;) Looks like you had fun, be sure and visit the area in the summer for some incredible wheeling.

Nice! I saw someplace that there are no guard rails because of snow removal. Snow plow driving must be a blast! Thanks for sharing.

I have heard a few different reasons that it is called "The Million Dollar Highway".
1. That it cost 1 Million dollars a mile to build back in the 1920's.
2. That there was a millions dollars worth of gold lost when moving the mountain to build it.
Either way it is an Awesome ride.
BTW it's only the section of the road from Ouray to Red Mnt pass

Awesome pics no doubt. Thanks for sharing!

The "Million Dollar Highway" nickname is unknown but in reading some local history articles and old photos on it they say one source claims the phrase came from an eighteen hundreds stage coach rider that took this primitive carved out shelf road trip and after white knuckling it through he declared " you couldn't pay me a million dollars to ride on that road again". Lol...

Glad everyone is enjoying the photos.....
